Ref: WOS/091213

Paediatric Emergency Medicine

Royal Hospital for Sick Children

Yorkhill, Glasgow

Description

1 year’s additional training to sub-specialise in paediatric emergency medicine will include 6 months working in the paediatric emergency department, 3 months paediatric critical care and 3 months paediatric medicine.

The Emergency Department at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children sees approximately 45,000 new patients each year with an age range of birth to thirteenth birthday but includes older patients with chronic health problems. The department runs a review clinic four times a week for patients with minor injuries which trainees are encouraged to attend.

The department serves the children of the city of Glasgow and the hospital is the tertiary referral centre for the west of Scotland. There is rapid access to laboratory and advanced radiology facilities.

There are currently fourteen junior members of staff from a mixture of paediatrics, emergency medicine and general practice and they work a full shift system. In addition there is a grid trainee in paediatric emergency medicine. The trainee would spend their time working across the department in the minor injuries/illness area, the resuscitation room and the medical assessment unit which also serves as an observation facility for patients.

The trainees are supported by 6 consultants and one associate specialist with a mix of paediatric and emergency backgrounds. The consultants provide shop floor cover for 12 hours a day between Monday and Friday and 6 hours a day at weekends. Further support is provided by a dedicated team of nurses including 3 Nurse Practitioners. There are weekly multidisciplinary departmental meetings that include implementation of guidelines and clinical governance.

There are excellent teaching opportunities within the department. Each week the junior staff have 2 hours of protected teaching time on a Wednesday afternoon. The middle grade staff have an additional hour of teaching every Thursday lunchtime. This involves joint radiology meetings, journal club, clinical and management sessions in rotation. In addition paediatrics has weekly grand rounds and monthly hospital academic meetings.

The Critical Care department manages 16 intensive care and 6 high dependency care beds. The specialist and general intensive care provided reflects the comprehensive tertiary medical and surgical specialities and the major emergency and acute receiving services provided by the hospital. The unit supports paediatric cardiac surgery, invasive cardiology and ECMO services. A transport and retrieval service supports critically ill and injured patients presenting to other hospitals throughout Scotland. The critical care department have weekly teaching sessions for junior staff.

The paediatric medical department encompasses general and speciality paediatric services for children in Glasgow and the west of Scotland. There will be opportunities to see a variety of paediatric medical patients in the acute and clinic settings. There are weekly medical grand rounds and monthly hospital CME meetings.
