The criminal department –

The criminal department is based at our offices in Whitechapel, Tottenham and Clapham. There are currently2member partners, 4salaried partners, 10 solicitors, 2trainee solicitors and 7 paralegals in the department.

We cover police stations and courts all over London but specifically in East,North and South London. Within the criminal department there is a specialist youth crime unit.

Our clients come from across London and beyond. Our client base is from many different ethnic backgrounds and a significant number do not speak English. As with any legal practice based in inner city area, many of our clients suffer social deprivation and have suffered traumatic experiences in the past. A significant proportion of our clients are vulnerable because of youth, disability or mental health problems.

We have a strong commitment to training of our staff. We deliver regular internal training courses for staff of all levels of experience. Anthony Edwards who delivers training courses across the country every year is involved in this training as are several other members of staff with considerable experience of legal training.

CRIMINAL DEPARTMENT MANAGER – THE ROLE

The Criminal Department of T V EdwardsLLP seeks to appoint a Criminal Department Manager. This is an exciting opportunity to take on a new position and is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious and enthusiastic person who has the ability to motivate and performance manage our team of criminal lawyers and paralegals. You will provide direction towards the achievement of maximum efficiency in line with company vision and strategies.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • To lead, manage and motivate fee earners.
  • Monitor and maintain service levels.
  • Ensure targets, service levels and key performance indicators are met, on a daily/weekly basis.
  • Continuous updating of the policies and procedures of the department.
  • Drive performance through regular meetings.
  • Performance management and identifying individual training requirements and implementation and delivery of training plans.
  • Co-ordinate regular coaching and training for new and existing staff.
  • Provide support and assistance for fee earners to help and develop their skills and knowledge.
  • Take ownership for resolving day-to-day team issues.
  • Receive detailed enquiries, qualify, filter and distribute within given boundaries.
  • Preparation and delivery of Management Information.
  • Ensure correct forecasting for staffing requirements.
  • Responsible for continuous updates to the Member Partners, Head of Department and Managing Partner on issues such as fee earner and staff development, training, overtime, targets, service levels, productivity etc.
  • Identify improvements where necessary and make recommendations on solutions.
  • Hold regular meetings to ensure effective communications to the department.

You will be based at our head office in Whitechapel but will involve working from all offices of the firm.

An intensive induction programme will be provided which will introduce you to office systems and our computerised case management system.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

ESSENTIAL CRITERA –

Previous management experience in a comparable role.

An ability to multi-task effectively through accurate planning, prioritisation and utilisation of own time and that of the teams.

Ability to communicate with fee earners and employees at all levels

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent organisation skills.

IT Literate with experience with knowledge of all Microsoft packages at intermediate level.

An outgoing personality, conscientious with an eye for detail and an eagerness to learn
An ability to motivate others

A willingness to be flexible dependent upon the demands of the business dynamics

Ability to prioritise and work efficiently under pressure
