The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Directed by Robert Winans, Musical Direction by Kristin Zaryski, Choreography by Laura Preston

FAQs:

Q: What is the play about?

A: Based on theVictor Hugo novel and songs fromthe Disney animated feature,The Hunchback of Notre Dameshowcases the film’s Academy Award-nominated score, as well as new songs by Menken and Schwartz. Peter Parnell’s new book embraces story theatre and features verbatim passages from Hugo’s gothic novel.

The musical begins as the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be "Out There," observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though – the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies – and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all.

Q: When are the auditions?

A: General auditions are on Nov.12th13th (Sun. & Mon.). They will run in 5 minute time slots from 6:30-9:00 P.M.on Sunday and 7:00-9:00 on Monday. The dance audition will be the same day as your general audition. They will bein a 30 minute block from 9:00-9:30 P.M. Please note that we will start the dance audition as soon as the last general audition is over, which may be earlier than the listed time. Callbacks are at the request of the directors and will be on Wednesday,November15th, 6:00-10:00 P.M.

Q: How do I sign up to audition?

A: A sign-up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board outside of the chorus room. CLEARLY PRINT your name in the first available time slot. DO NOT SKIP SLOTS!

Q: What do I need to prepare for the audition?

A:For your 5 minute general audition, please memorize and prepare a 30-60 second monologue. You will also memorize and prepare two short musical selections from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The sheet music will be handed out at the meeting. For the dance audition, you should arrive stretched and dressed to move. No sandals, skirts, loose jewelry, tight jeans, etc. You will learn a combination and then show it in groups.

Q: How do I prepare a monologue?

A: You can take a 30-60 second snippet from a play. This is probably less text than you think. Time it while reading it OUT LOUD – it makes a big difference. You can also do a Google search for monologues, and there are books of monologues at the library or bookstores. Please no monologues from movies. Regardless of where you find one or where it’s from, you must know who is speaking, to whom are they speaking, what the situation is, why they’re speaking, what they want from the other person, etc. Monologues do not exist in a vacuum – know what the rest of the story is. If you do not know, find out. If you cannot find out, make up some strong and specific choices. To memorize, try these easy steps: read it often, reading it out loud is better, and reading it out loud with someone else checking your accuracy is better still. Practice it the way you plan to do it (with inflection, emotion, and volume) or it probably will not go the way you hope.

Q: What do I need to bring to the audition?

A: Bring the completed Audition Form with an attached photograph along with the completed media release form, contract, and conflict calendar. The photo does not need to be a professional headshot – just something that will let us put a name with a face. A school picture or snapshot is fine. Please put your name on the back of the picture and staple it to your audition form.

Q: When should I arrive for my audition?

A: You should arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled time. You will be able to check in, catch your breath, warm-up, etc. Also, there is a chance auditions could be running ahead of schedule. If you are late to your audition, you run the risk of losing your time slot or having to wait until the end. Auditions will take place in Kulp Auditorium.

Q: Will I be allowed to watch other people’s auditions?

A: No, auditions are closed; meaning only the directors of the show will be watching the auditions. No friends, family, etc.

Q: How do callbacks work?

A:The callback list will be posted online on Monday, November 13th. Callbacks will be Wednesday, November 15th from 6:00-10:00 P.M. Not everyone will be called back. People who are not called back may still be cast in the show. Callbacks will consist of readings of the script and songs from the show. The more familiar you are with the material going into the auditions, the better off you will be. We will post callback material online.

Q: When will we find out about casting?

A: The cast list will hopefully be posted online and on the callboard by Thursday, November 16th, possibly sooner. You will need to email me at to accept your part. Please do not audition if you do not intend to take whatever part you are cast for.

Q: When will rehearsals be?

A: From January 14th to March22nd,rehearsals will generallybe Sunday&Wednesday, 6:30-9:00 and Monday & Thursday, 7:00-9:30. The week of April 1st we will also rehearse on Tuesday from 7:00-9:30. The tech week schedule is below. All rehearsals are mandatory and you need to be able to be at allrehearsals. Any exceptions will be granted on a case by case basis. We will provide a rehearsal schedule with as much advance notice as possible so you will know if you are needed for the entire rehearsal, or at all, but plan to be called for every rehearsal. In the event of many lost days due to bad weather, we will need to schedule rehearsals to make up for that lost time. If you have too many conflicts, you may not be considered for a lead, or to be in the show at all. Please accurately list all conflicts on the included calendar. It would be helpful to indicate whether or not you would be willing to eliminate or minimize a conflict for a part in our show. Please note that rehearsals will be closed. Anyone not working directly with the production will be asked to leave rehearsal.
