Dear Junior Parents and Guardians,

We are pleased to announce that all eleventh grade students will be given the opportunity to experience the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT/NMSQT) on Wednesday, October 11, 2017. This week, your sons and daughters will receive a PSAT test preparation manual and sample PSAT in their English class. Enclosed is the 2017 PSAT/NMSQT – The Parent Perspective for your review.

The PSAT/NMSQT measures verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities that are important for success in college. Taking the test enables students to practice for the SAT Reasoning Test, enter scholarship competitions, seek information from colleges, and get feedback about critical academic skills. While in their English classes, studentswere instructed that they should create personal accounts on CollegeBoard.org and link those accounts with Khan Academy. Khan Academy provides free, individualized SAT preparation for students in an online format that can be accessed at any time. If your son or daughter did not complete the registration process, please ensure that they do so this week. There is a PowerPoint on our high school’s website under Guidance & Counseling, which outlines the process of creating an account.

This is the second opportunity for the Class of 2019 to take the PSAT. The practice juniors will receive by taking the PSAT will help them prepare for taking the SAT Reasoning Test this spring. In addition, juniors will also be participating in the National Merit Scholarship Program that could ultimately lead to scholarship money for college. We will be distributing the score reports to each student sometime in mid-December through English classes.

Junior year is a very important year for students to explore their interests. There will be individual and group work highlighting college searches and visits, Naviance and the Family Connection Program, and course selection planning.

We look forward to continuing to work with your family to support your child so that they can reach their academic and personal goals. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Maureen HealyCasey Rowe
