Medieval World History
Seventh Grade Social Studies, Mrs. Lee
Course Overview
August 2016
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome aboard to a brand new school year! I hope you have had an enjoyable summer and that you are well-rested and energized for an exciting journey of study around the Medieval world. I am anticipating that students will learn and grow in many areas as they go through this course as well as the rest of their classes.
The 7th grade social studies course of study is Medieval World History. Our journey through civilizations of the medieval world will cover CA State and District Standards and will focus the following topics: Geography, Religion, Achievements, Politics, Economy, and Social structure. As students explore the GRAPES of each civilization we study, they will be exercising skills such as note-taking, vocabulary, writing, and oral language. Common Core Standards such as writing arguments to support claims with factual evidence, and close reading of high-level text are just a few that will be implemented in the Social Studies discipline.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns at (818) 758-5600 ext. or email at . Thank you for your support.

Materials* to Bring Each Day
· Black or dark blue pens AND pencils
· Social studies notebook (spiral-bound, 8.5”x11” notebook with at least 100 pages)
· Loose-leaf paper
· Social Studies Textbook: World History: Medieval and Early Modern Times
· Colored pencils and/or markers, glue-stick (these are not required but highly encouraged)
Class Procedures and Requirements
· Warm-up: First 15 minutes of class. Students copy daily itinerary (agenda) and respond in writing to a question or questions related to the day’s lesson/topic into their travel journals (notebooks). Students work individually and silently.
· Travel Journal (Class notebook): Students will need to have 1 spiral notebook by the first days of school. Please try to obtain a 8.5”x11” notebook with 100-120 pages. This notebook is for Social Studies only, not other classes. Students will be taking notes, doing warm-ups and homework, and other classwork in their notebooks. Their notebooks will contain very important information that they will need to study for quizzes and unit tests and to complete assignment and projects. Students are required to have it with them each time they come to class.
*Students are responsible for replacing the spiral notebook once all pages are filled, usually at the beginning of the 2nd semester.
· Student work: Completed and graded student work will remain in class in student portfolios until the end of each unit. About once a month, they will bring home a “Unit Packet” for parents to review, sign and return to class for a letter grade. Student may assume the responsibility to take work home to show parents, but it must be brought back to class promptly so that it is included in their “Unit Packet”.
· Weekly Mini-Quiz: Students take a mini-quiz at the end of each week. Please make sure they study their notes in their notebook nightly.
· Homework Chart: Work turned in is recorded on a class chart. A combination of 3 missing homeworks/assignments in a 5 week grading period will earn the student a “U” for work habits on report card.
· Academic Progress Log: Students will record all graded assignments, quizzes, and tests on a log provided by the teacher. Parents will be asked to sign after each assignment is logged by the student. This log will be attached to students’ notebooks.
