CARNIVAL GAME PROJECT

The purpose of this project is to research carnival games and games of chance, to build a working model of a carnival type game, to use that model to collect data, to use that data to compare the experimental and theoretical probabilities that apply to your game, and to apply those probabilities to the financial aspect of running such a game. The 3 parts of this project must be complete and demonstrate work of the highest quality.

Part 1: Group Proposal (100 pts – daily grade) Due Date: ______

Your group must complete and submit a plan for approval that includes the following:

A.  Research summary describing 3 games you researched, a brief description of how you would calculate probabilities for each game, and the source of your information. (25pts)

B.  A detailed description of the game you are going to build a model of (25 pts)

C.  A list of materials you are planning to use to build the working model and how you plan to obtain them (consider recycling or repurposing) (25pts)

D.  A list of specific group members responsibilities (25pts)

Part 2: Playable / Working Model of Game (100 pts – test) Due Date: ______

A.  Construction / Appearance: must be appropriately sized, carefully made, and shows evidence of work. (25 pts)

B.  Rules: are clearly explained and easy to follow. You must create a set of written or typed instructions to clearly explain your game. They must be easy to follow so that anyone can pick them up, read them and begin playing your game. (25 pts)

C.  Playable: game is easy to play (not easy to win). (25 pts)

D.  Models probability appropriately. (25 pts)

Part 3: Report (100 pts – test) Due Date: ______

Your report may be written in report form, on a poster, or in a power point or other appropriate presentation format but MUST contain the following:

A.  Summary of game rules / description of game (15 pts)

B.  Table of data collected from playing game – must be 50 + (15 pts)

C.  Experimental and Theoretical probabilities calculated and explained (25 pts)

D.  Financial Report for running the game for 100 plays (25 pts)

E.  Reflection (1 Per Group Member, turned in separately) (20 pts)

Report

A.  Summary - Provide an overview of your game. (1 Per Group)

●  What type of game is it?

●  Where would you play this type of game?

●  How much does it cost to play?

●  What are the prizes if you win?

●  Instructions - Step-by-Step instructions for how to play the game.

●  Game Description - List all materials needed to play (dice, spinner, darts, ball, etc.)

●  Draw picture of your game board, if necessary

B.  Table of Data (1 Per Group)

·  Organize data collected from classmates playing the game

·  You should have data from 50+ tries

C.  Probability Analysis (1 Per Group)

●  Is the game fair? Show the mathematical calculations for the expected value of winning the game. (Theoretical Probability)

●  If the game is not fair, how could you change the game to make it fair?

●  What was the experimental probability of winning the game (use your data that was collected)? Show the mathematical calculations for the actual value of winning the game.

●  Compare and Contrast the theoretical and experimental probability – Explain what you discovered about probability and how it pertains to your game.

D.  Financial Report

·  Calculate the cost to run the game for 100 plays.

·  Include the cost for supplies

·  Include the cost of prizes based on both the theoretical and experimental probability of someone winning the game in those 100 plays.

E.  Reflection – Each student must write a 1-page reflection (1 Per Person)

●  What were your overall feelings about this project?

●  Did this project help you understand the probability any better?

●  How did your group work together?

●  Were there any group members that didn’t pull their weight? Any group members who tried to boss the group around?

●  Relevance: What have you learned about “Fair Games”? What is your opinion about Las Vegas and the gaming industry? Do you think it’s fair to have establishments designed for people to lose money? What is your opinion on the lottery? Would you advise your grandmother to play? What do you think about gaming casinos?
