Resource Summary/Overview: As students read either The Diary of Anne Frank or the play version, they come to a better understand of the plight of Jewish refugees during World War II. Help students use that understanding to connect to the Syrian refugees of today by reading the news article “Syrian refugees’ story mimics struggles by Anne Frank’s family 75 years ago” on Newsela, a website that adapts news articles to multiple Lexile levels, promoting differentiation.

Length: One 45-minute class period
