Weyerhaeuser Enhances Eastern Parallam® PSL

New Coating Improves Weatherability

Seattle, Wash. –Weyerhaeuser, the industry leader in engineered wood innovations, has upgraded the company's Trus Joist® Eastern Parallam® PSL beams and columns with a new unique coating. The patent-pending proprietary surface modification technology reduces the rate of moisture absorption during yarding and construction, and delays the effects of ultraviolet (UV) degradation.

"The new coating is uniformly sprayed on to both the narrow edge and wide face of Eastern Parallam PSL at our manufacturing facility and chemically modifies the outside wood surface of the beam or column," says Barry Viviano, engineered wood product region manager with Weyerhaeuser. "The protective surface covering resists thickness swell from exposure to both moisture and UV conditions during construction. When combined with our existing end sealant, this technology further improves the weatherability performance of the beams and columns.

"Along with reducing the rate of moisture absorption during yard storage and construction, the new coating also provides an improved appearance on the product. Parallam is a strong and efficient engineered wood product that offers builders consistent performance."

Extensive laboratory and field testing of the coating includes exposure to exterior conditions during a range of typically adverse weather conditions. Eastern Parallam PSL performed well in all cases when the product was properly stored and the end seal was maintained. Studies indicate that the combined effect of the surface coating and end sealer help the pieces achieve the maximum level of dimensional stability at the ends of each piece.

Manufactured in Buckhannon, W.V., Eastern Parallam PSL is available east of the Mississippi River, and is intended for interior use applications, such as open concept floor plans and great rooms. After sanding the surface, the product can be stained, painted or finished to add long-term beauty to any project. Eastern Parallam PSL products include a limited product warranty for the life of a home.
