Department Updates

Career Pathways – Richard Gonzalez:

1)  New Interim Director is Tiffany Miller.

2)  Career Advancement Academy (CAA): We are currently recruiting for the spring 2016 semester for 8 week classes that begin January 16th. Please share flyers (provided at meeting) with anyone who might be interested. Information sessions for the students will be held on Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30, where we help the students apply to ECC and complete their FAFSA.

3)  CTE Transitions: We are currently working on reaching out to alumni from our high schools that have offered Project Lead the Way classes at their schools to let their students know that they can articulate their credit and may be very close to earning a certificate in Advanced Manufacturing or Engineering Technology. Counselors in our new ITEC START (Student Technology Achievement Resource Training) Center wil be calling several hundred students. In addition, we are working with DaVinci Charter School to create an Architecture Career pathway for their students..

4)  AMETLL: Career Ladders: We have about 1000 students concurrently enrolled earning college credit in Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing classes. These students are also participating in many work experience activities including industry tours, industry speakers and job shadowing. We are also in the process of hiring an external evaluator to tell us what the benefits are working as a consortium.

5)  LAUSD Linked Learning: We are also working with other colleges to help them align their Engineering Technology classes and Advanced Manufacturing programs with their feeder high schools and are sharing best practices when it comes to articulation agreements.

6)  General: We are working with a number of high schools to create additional career pathways and additional concurrent enrollment opportunities. New additions are El Segundo, North and South Torrance.

Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia:

1)  We’re looking for a new director. The position will close on the 24th.

2)  The only training we have now is Soldering.

Community Education – Veronica Mendoza: (not in attendance):.

Center for Customized Training (CCT) – Maricela Vital:

1)  ET16-0804 AB118 Alternative & Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Technology Program ($488,796.00) – Term September 8, 2015 to September 7, 2017: The contract was awarded at the August 28 Panel Meeting. Cerritos is taking a more in-depth approach to enrolling, marketing and filling the classes. Some of the participants include the cities of Anaheim, Burbank, Culver City, Glendale, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, LA County Public Works as well as Complete Coach.

2)  ET14-0800 AB118 Alternative & Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Technology Program ($375,000) – Term August 5, 2013-August 4, 2015: The close-out report was received from ETP. Training concluded and pending invoices are being processed.

3)  ET15-0804 (Supplemental) AB118 Alternative & Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Technology Program ($64,640) – Term: January 1, 2015-December 31, 2016: Training concluded. We will be informed when the close-out monitor visit will take place.

4)  ET14-0217 Two-Year Core Contract ($1,260,645) – Term: November 25, 2013 – November 24, 2015: All rosters and attendance are being verified, in preparation for final invoicing and pending close-out report.

5)  ET15-0427 – New Two Year Core Contract ($649,350) – Term: May 4, 2015 – May 3, 2017. About 20 companies have or are participating in training. Some are BTC companies, others are under our training partners (Antelope Valley College, Cerritos CCD and Saddleback College).

6)  Other Activities: Eldon attended the CCCAOE Conference in San Diego in October.

Grants – Jennifer Hutcherson:

1)  Grant proposal submission(s): Community Education submitted a request to LA County Arts Commission: a three-event series combining planetarium shows, art works and/or performances, and conversations between artists and astronomers.

Cal Wellness Foundation: Foster Care program.

2)  Grant proposal(s) in progress and/or planned: Title V and next H-1B through Department of Labor.

3)  Grants Awarded: Teacher Prep Pipeline for another 2 years (approximately $120,000/year). Adult Education Block Grant AB104 $2,215,272. Historically Black Colleges and Universities Augmentation (total of $185,174 awarded).

4)  Grants being managed by the Grants Office: AB104 AEBG reports turned in November 2nd; Reader’s Conference December 2nd and 3rd.

Prop 39 provides funds for creating an energy efficient and knowledgeable workforce. Funds are to improve efficient/clean energy programs at both campuses. Submitted the 3rd quarter report.

SB-1070, LA ring colleges. Creating a certificate in Engineering Technology.

Currently working on OSHA training of trainers to train faculty.

Teacher Preparation Pipeline. Added Denise DiPasquale to coordinate grant activities.

5)  General Update(s): Attended National Career Pathways Annual Conference (Jenny)

Attended the Council for Resource Development Annual Conference (Bobby)

Attended the National Science Foundation Grants Conference (Bobby).

Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger:

1)  Our Go Biz Grant was renewed.

2)  We have met all our goals set by the lead center this year for start-ups, long term clients and capital infusion.

3)  The SBDC is busy wrapping up the year end.

4)  We had our first Go Biz audit and did just fine.

5)  Star is working on strategic goals with the lead center.

6)  Star is in the middle of securing a partnership with the City of Gardena.

7)  The SBDC is continuing to offer our usual workshops through mid-December and just finished the Quickbooks series. A new series will start after the first of the year.

Workshops for December are: 12/1 – The Basics of Starting a Business, and also Business Loans 101; 12/2 – Small Business Orientation; 12/8 – How to Estimate Start-up Costs a& Cash Flow; 12/10 – Marketing 101, and How to Network to Build Revenue; 12/15 – Seven Steps for an Effective Social Media; 12/16 Business Licenses, Corporations & LLC’s; 12/17 – Small Business Orientation, and How to Create Powerful Elevator Pitch, and Export Workshop.

Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan:

1)  Terminal Island: Federal Budget no signed.

Welding: New 5-year contract to begin January 11, 2016.

Parenting: Year 1 of 5-year contract to begin January 5th.

Submission of course syllabus for 20-hr Customer Service.

2)  Metropolitan Detention Center: Parenting year 1 of 5-year contract began January 5th. MDC is looking for educational opportunities for soon to be released inmates.

3)  Maritime Training - STCW-95:

STCW (Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping), Lifeboat, and Security Awareness to be held monthly.

Advanced Fire: December 14-18, 2015..

Tankerman: Instructor, Johnathan Brainard. Instructor is not available until 2016.

VPDSD (Security Awareness) Monthly – last Monday of the month.

Vessel Security Officer (VSO): Need to submit changes for approval by the Coast Guard.

3-Day STCW Refresher to be available 2016

Leadership & Teamwork to be available 2016

Train the Trainer to be available 2016

New class for all USCG Instructors.

4)  Retail, Hospitality, Tourism Grant (RHT): Judith Norton and Caroline O’Reilly will have a training program for individuals interested in opening a restaurant/food service business in California.
