8/24/16

The history that I have with Tony Squire goes back 20 years. When I was 16 I was a tall, skinny and green to the game of basketball, then I met Tony. Before I hooked up with his program I had never left Virginia to play the game of basketball. Traveling across America with his teams are some of my fondest memories. The thing about playing with Squires Richmond is that is so much more than a AAU basketball Team. Tony has been there for me throughout various points in my life to help guide me and give advice. He helped convince me to get my Master Degree. His saying was and always and will always be a degree for free. Thanks to Tony I have 2 degrees.

As far as playing the game of basketball Tony advanced my game tremendously with his help. We did everything the right way. We practiced hard, played to win, and we got better every time we were together. We always played in-front of the best coaches in the country and Tony always had a relationship with everyone that was recruiting one of his players. He knows the business of college basketball. He has developed creditability with college coaches across the country because of the way he runs his program.

One instance that I can remember is that we were playing in Las Vegas in one of the biggest tournaments of the summer. We had been playing well and had made it to the elite 8. Some of our players were out past curfew. With Tony caring about more than just basketball he benched our two best player the night before the elite 8 game to teach them a life lesson. “You are only going to be as good on the court as you are off the court” Tony would tell us all the time. He sent his message loud and clear to those young men.

Once I got to college I found out the lesson Tony was giving us held true once I got to college. Being on time, playing with grit, being good off the court translated to being good on the court. These lessons I am forever grateful to Tony for instilling in me. These are the lessons that he continues to pass out to young men today. These lessons have stood the test of time over last 3 decades. Tony Squire is involved with the youth for the right reasons! For that I am forever grateful.

Thank you for everything that you have done for me,
