Description of Service
Dr Metcalfe is one of 5 Old Age psychiatrists working out of Mossley Hill Hospital (MHH) providing services to an elderly population of approximately 53,000. Dr Metcalfe’s Team serves an elderly population of ~ 11,000.
The Trainee provides inpatient care to patientson Acorn and Oak Wards at MossleyHillHospital. When required, the Trainee also provides input to Venmore Mews (Specialist Young Onset Dementia) Day Centre and Paisley Court and Heys Court Nursing Homes (Continuing Health Care facilities).
The majority of the work is community based.
Setting where work will be carried out
This post covers the following sites:
  • Community – all outpatients will be seen in their own homes
  • Acorn and Oak Wards (on MHH site)
  • Heys Court (Garston – 3 miles from MHH)
  • Paisley Court (Dovecot - 5 miles from MHH)
General Overview of Training Experience and Job Role
There will be an expectation that you attend local postgraduate teaching programmes, as well as specific programmes that are available to you.
  • Individual supervision – weekly 1 hour with Dr. Metcalfe
  • MRCPsych Course at RoyalLiverpoolUniversityHospital
  • Local Academic meetings, each Tuesday morning at MHH
  • Ballaint Group
  • Audit project, supervised by Dr Metcalfe
  • Opportunities to gain knowledge of Young Onset Dementia, Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
Responsibilities of Trainee
  • To assess, review and contribute to the management of inpatients.
  • To attend ward rounds held once a week.
  • Two outpatient clinics per week where several new patients and some of Trainee’s own follow-ups are seen by the Trainee under supervision of Dr. Metcalfe.
  • To maintain up to date electronic and other medical records to a high standard.
  • To dictate all letters promptly.
  • To work closely with other members of the MDT and to see carers/relatives as required.
