Dominating weekend at season’s finale for Team Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing
Lee Butler and his teammate Iain Hayden, who clinched the CSRA Pro Open Championship this past weekend, put Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing in the winner’s circle at the final round of the Snowcross Nationals at Horseshoe Valley in Barrie, ON.
They totally dominated the proceedings with Hayden snaring first place in the final on Saturday and Butler bringing home first on Sunday.
Hayden sent a strong message to the competition that he came to take care of business at the ultimate showdown of the season. In his qualifiers on Saturday, he grabbed the holeshot both times to then lead wire-to-wire. He also holeshot the final to speed off to a convincing win. In Sunday’s racing action, Hayden put the icing on the cake by going 1-2 in his qualifiers and grabbing a solid 2nd place in the final.
By clinching his fourth CSRA National Championship title—which together with the CSRA Ontario Provincial Championship that he claimed a week earlier in Kitchener—Hayden left no doubt in anyone’s mind that he is a champion’s champion who will be the man to beat next season.
As he did in the provincial title hunt the Espanola, ON native led the national series from the get-go, keeping a comfortable points lead in the process. He cemented the championship with an impressive 96 points on second place in the series David Joanis.
“Although nothing compares to winning your first championship, when you win another one there’s the motivation to keep on going and try to set a record. Right now I’m tied for winning the most CSRA pro championships and that’s pretty exciting. I’m really stoked winning the title this year,” Hayden said. “Things started out a little shaky at times, but as the season progressed we really started pulling everything together. Everyone worked really well together and I owe a lot of my success to our crew chief and team manager Stu. The Polaris IQ sleds proved to be second to none and that really gave me an advantage.”
Despite coming off a foot injury, Butler held up his end to assure a 1-3 finish in the championship for Team Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing. In Saturday’s qualifiers, he recorded 3-2 results. In the final, he didn’t quite get the start he needed to finish in the top three, taking 5th at the flag when all was said and done.
Undaunted, Butler pulled out all the stops on Sunday to hammer down 2-1 finishes in his qualifiers and then wrap up the season with a win in the final. He snagged the holeshot of his second qualifier as well as the final. Butler, who ended up losing his Pro Open crown to Hayden, came within one point of securing second place in the title hunt.
“It’s never easy losing the title when you’re the defending champ, but it’s not so bad when you lose it to your teammate. When it comes to the big picture, your and your teammate’s goal is first and foremost to win the title for your team and sponsors, and we achieved that. We definitely had the equipment and crew to do that,” Butler said. “To win a championship you have to be consistent and Iain was without a doubt the most consistent out there. I had hoped to at least finish runner-up, but I guess I’ll have to settle for third. I know I had the speed this year, winning a number of races proved that. I just wasn’t able to put it together at every event.”
Team Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing would like to congratulate Iain Hayden for his double championship win this season, as well as Lee Butler for delivering a noteworthy third place in both the provincial and national title hunts. A special thank you goes to Adam “Stu” Robinson and the rest of the crew for their hard work behind the scenes, making sure Iain and Lee had the best equipment on the track. Thanks also to all our quality sponsors whose invaluable contribution helped land two pro titles this year.
