Before Teaching

Big Ideas and Key Understandings

Children take comfort in the routines their parents provide.

Synopsis

This poem is an Animal Fantasy is about a little lamb named Woolly who is sleepy and cannot find his mother to tug him in tonight. While searching for her, other mother animals try to tuck him in but it wasn’t right. At the end of the story, Woolly finds his mother who tucks him in just right. The poem is entertaining with literary devices, including repetition, rhyme, and onomatopoeia.

Culminating Task

  • Re-Read, Think, Discuss, And Write.
  • Students will be given pictures of animals in the story who tried to help Woolly go to sleep and they will match the animal with the way it tried to help Wooly go to sleep. With prompting from the teacher, the students will be asked, who the first, second, third, etc. animal was that tried to tuck Woolly in. The students will fill in the blank writing the name of each animal under the picture and the action word of what the animal did to help Wooly get to sleep, given a set and support from the teacher.
  • Sample answers:Cow – snug and tight, Cat – kissing, Horse – hug, Pig – snack, Duck – sing a lullaby, Mother Sheep – tucked him in just right

Additional Tasks

  • Have the children draw pictures of what they do first, next, and last of their routine with their parent before going to bed at night.
  • Have the children draw pictures of what they do first, next, and last of their routine with their parent before coming to school in the morning.
  • The teacher will give the students a 3 or 4 picture flow map and have them draw their routine in the classroom.
  • Have students chorally respond to the repeated “That’s not right! Oh, who will tuck me in tonight?”
  • Name the author and illustrator and discuss what they do with a story.
  • Students will name characters and setting of the story.
  • Remind students to follow the words from left to right and top to bottom when reading along from the Smartboard.
  • The teacher will explain/provide examples of what a poem is and looks like. (Poem is a collection of words that express and emotion or idea, sometimes with a specific rhythm. An example is Mary Had a Little Lamb).

Note to Teacher

Expect students to respond with complete sentences. Model and scaffold responses with sentence starters as needed. Also, expand on student responses (when responses are short and easily expanded) and have students repeat the expanded answer.
