Late Assignments:
Students are expected to write in their planner each day.
Homework is usually self-checking .
Please make sure your child does not JUST COPY the work off the work/solution side of PRACTICE PAPERS.
The design of the homework as self-checking is to help your child LEARN .
Assignments Turned in ON TIME : 100% (A)
Assignments Turned in LATE : 75% (C-)
Assignments Completed WITH TEACHER during LUNCH DETENTION: 50% (NOT a ZERO)
Absent Assignments:
1. When a student is absent from class it is the student's responsibility to turn in any assignment due during the time of the absence(s). The teacher's Assignment Book/Planner is located at the front of the room to inform students exactlywhat was turned in and assigned on the day(s) absent. Write "absent" at the top of the assignment(s) and place it in the Absent Work Folder.
2. If a handout was assigned it will be located in a near by file folder labeled (Pick Up--absent work)..
3. You have two days for each day absent to turn in absent work. After the allowed time period, absent assignments not turned in will be treated as late assignments.

Daily Review Problems
When students enter the classroom, they should immediately and independently begin working the REVIEW PROBLEMS from the study cards (or board). These problems are self-checking. Once the student is finished, he/she should check his/her work. If the problem is incorrect and the student understands the mistake made, he or she should make corrections. If the student, does not understand he/she should go ahead and correct the problem (in addition, he/she should place a question mark beside the problem and be prepared to ask questions). After the teacher has taken roll, students may ask for help--all questions will be answered.
MISTAKES are opportunities to LEARN
These problems will be collected on Friday for a completion grade.
Students should "fix" all mistakes and show "all" work.
------
Problems from the Daily Review Section are possible quiz questions at the end of the week. Quiz questions may also be similar to problems found on the Practice Sheets found in your child's Math Folder. Students should take time to periodically review problems from these sections.
8th Grade
Learning Targets
"What I should know in mathematics."
Grade-Level Expectation: N2C8
Apply properties of operations to all rational numbers including order of operations and inverse operations .
- I should know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers and decimals from 6th grade.
- I should know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide mixed numbers from 6th and 7th grade.
- I should know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers from 7th grade.
- I should know rational numbers include counting numbers/natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, fractions/mixed numbers, and decimals.
- I should know how to use properties (see pages 820-821) when computing with rational numbers.
- I should know how to use the rules of "order of operations" when solving problems with rational numbers.
- I should know how to use "inverse operations" to solve equations with rational numbers.

Class Work (Problems)
"COPY ME" TEACHING will be used to introduce most new concepts.
Step One: Watch Me
Step Two: Describe what you saw me do.
Step Three: Watch me again while I describe.
Step Four: You try the SAME one.
Step Five: Now...You try a SIMILAR one.
Following "Copy Me" Teaching
Class work usually consists of the teacher working with the students. Students are asked to independently work a problem or set of problems and then they are discussed in "detail" where students have the opportunity to discover their mistakes and ask questions.
Students are expected to work during the alloted time and then "fix" any and all mistakes in the problems during class discussion. Class work is periodically collected and participation points are given.

Study/Practice
You should have PRACTICE SHEETS in your binder.
How to USE your PRACTICE SHEETS...
1. Using the PRACTICE Sheet, pretend you are taking a quiz and WORK OUT the problems on loose-leaf paper.
You can either do a few problems at a time or complete all the problems before checking.
2. When finished, pretend you are the teacher, pick up your grading pen and check your work.
· If the problem is correct, draw a ‘star' by the problem.
· If the problem is not correct, find your mistake and correct it with your grading pen.
· If you are completely lost on even one particular problem, ASK FOR HELP . Since the work/solution is there, your parents, other relatives, or friends may be able to help you understand.
· HOWEVER, I will give you extra help before school in the old gym from 7:15—7:45 a.m.
· And, I will give you extra help during MATH STUDY CLUB.
3. Repeat these steps with all of your PRACTICE SHEETS.
4. Continue to do this process until you know YOU KNOW how to do the problems.
5. The loose-leaf paper should have your name, hour, and date in the right hand corner
and then be turned into your class tray the following day after assigned.

This information will help you along with the grades you see on PowerSchool.
Students:
75% of your grade comes from class work independently completed--quizzes and tests included.
Your quarter grade today is made up mostly from 2 quizzes and 1 mastery exam. Homework/Participation makes up the other 25%.
Quiz #1 Quiz #2 Mastery Exam over adding and subtracting integers
If your grades were low on Quiz #1 or #2 you had the opportunity to retake the quizzes and prove you learned the material. If you made a C- or higher on your retake quiz, your low grade was removed and replaced with your new grade.
Mastery Exams require you to make at least an 80% before you can earn a grade higher than 0%.
You have three attempts in class .
After the three class attempts, you are expected to meet with your teacher on your own time in order to prove you have mastered the material.
Grades of 80% or higher will then eliminate the ZERO.
I hope this information helps you!
Thank you,
R. Frelix
Graded Quizzes and Tests
Quizzes and tests have the GREATEST IMPACT on students' grades:
Have your child show you his/her Goal Sheet (it should be in the front of his/her math binder).
The goal sheet is used to track quiz grades. The goal is to be at 80% or higher on each individual quiz.
Students are encouraged to use their graded quiz and their PRACTICE SHEETS to
practice, practice, and practice again (See math folder for Practice Sheets.).
It could help if you discuss how to use a Practice Sheets with your child and possibly even watch him/her!
1. Using the PRACTICE Sheet, pretend you are taking a quiz and WORK OUT the problems on loose-leaf paper.
You can either do a few problems at a time or complete all the problems before checking.
2. When finished, pretend you are the teacher, pick up your grading pen and check your work.
If the problem is correct, draw a ‘star' by the problem.
If the problem is not correct, find the mistake and correct it with your grading pen.
If you are completely lost on even one particular problem, ASK FOR HELP . Since the work/solution is there,
your parents, other relatives, or friends may be able to help you understand.
HOWEVER, I will give you extra help before school in the old gym from 7:15—7:45 a.m.
And, I will give you extra help during MATH STUDY CLUB.
3. Repeat these steps with all of your PRACTICE SHEETS.
4. Continue to do this process until you know YOU KNOW how to do the problems.
5. Staple your practice work to the Retaking Quiz/Test Sheet with parent intitials.
After practicing students are encouraged and allowed to
retake their quiz during lunch (with the exception of Wednesday) or after school on any Monday or Thursday
(unless I post in class that I have a prior appointment--this usually does not happen but will every now and then).
In order to keep your child from getting overwhelmed, have him/her focus on each Practice Sheet as they are handed out.
I will replace your child's old grade with the new and improved grade as soon as I see that the material was learned.
Effort will pay off ...
You and your child will see an increase in his/her grade
if he/she will truly practice, practice, practice!!!

Tips for Parents
Tip #1--Basic Multiplication and Division Facts:
Make the time to use flash cards with your child to see for yourself if your child can "quickly" recall basic facts. Yes, your child should already be very efficient with their basic facts. However, you may be surprised. Separate the cards that seem to cause your child problems and "expect" your child to become efficient and then continue to check them on a regular basis.
These basic fact cards should eventually be replaced with "integer cards" (positive and negative numbers). Not knowing "quick" recall of basic multiplication and division facts will slow your child down and may cause him or her to feel powerless in math class. Important note, the calculator should not be used in place of "knowing" basic facts.
