What is the Multiple and Complex Needs Initiative?
The Multiple and Complex Needs Initiative is known as MACNI.
MACNI is about organising services to support you.
Why has the Department of Health and Human Services introduced this way of working?
/ In 2009, a new law was developed. This law is called the Human Services (Complex Needs) Act 2009./ This law tells service providers how to work together to support people with a range of support needs.
Some examples of types of services involved
How does it work?
/ You and your worker will discuss if you would like MACNI support.A group of workers will then decide if MACNI support is best for you.
/ If MACNI support is best for you, then a worker will contact you about making a care plan for you.
/ The worker will work with you to find out what you need and how you can be best supported.
/ A MACNI care plan describes the things you want support with and which services will help you to meet your goals.
/ If you agree to have a care plan, everyone (including you) needs to agree that this plan is right for you.
You can change your mind at any time if you don’t want to receive your supports this way.
/ A worker will make sure your care plan works well for you. This worker might be someone you know or someone new.
How long does a care plan last?
/ At first, a MACNI care plan will last for one year. It will be looked at regularly by you, your workers and others interested who support you, to make sure it is still okay./ If everything goes well, you and your worker may decide to continue your plan for a longer time.
Or you might not need MACNI support anymore.
You and your worker will work together to plan your future supports.
/ At any time, you can ask for your care plan to be changed or for it to end. A MACNI care plan can exist for up to three years.
How will this way of providing servicesbe different from what I get now?
/ This way of working means that different services work together, and everyone knows what is needed to support you./ To achieve this, information about you and your needs will be shared. Information that is not important will not be shared.
Do I have to be involved?
/ No. You can tell a worker, family member, friend or advocate if you don’t want to have a care plan.Where can I get more information?
Contact a MACNI Coordinator near you who will help you.
