Revise this Section by deleting and inserting text to meet Project-specific requirements.

This Section uses the term "Architect." Change this term to match that used to identify the design professional as defined in the General and Supplementary Conditions.

Verify that Section titles referenced in this Section are correct for this Project's Specifications; Section titles may have changed.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1  RELATED DOCUMENTS

Retain or delete this article in all Sections of Project Manual.

  1. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2  SUMMARY

  1. Section Includes:
  2. Fixed, [extruded-aluminum] [and] [formed-metal] louvers.
  3. Fixed, formed-metal acoustical louvers.
  4. Related Requirements:

Retain subparagraphs below to cross-reference requirements Contractor might expect to find in this Section but are specified in other Sections.

  1. Section081113 "Hollow Metal Doors and Frames" for louvers in hollow-metal doors.
  2. Section081416 "Flush Wood Doors" for louvers in flush wood doors.
  3. Section099113 "Exterior Painting" for field painting louvers.

1.3  DEFINITIONS

Retain terms that remain after this Section has been edited for a project.

  1. Louver Terminology: Definitions of terms for metal louvers contained in AMCA501 apply to this Section unless otherwise defined in this Section or in referenced standards.
  2. Horizontal Louver: Louver with horizontal blades (i.e., the axes of the blades are horizontal).
  3. Vertical Louver: Louver with vertical blades (i.e., the axes of the blades are vertical).
  4. Drainable-Blade Louver: Louver with blades having gutters that collect water and drain it to channels in jambs and mullions, which carry it to bottom of unit and away from opening.
  5. Wind-Driven-Rain-Resistant Louver: Louver that provides specified wind-driven rain performance, as determined by testing according to AMCA500-L.

1.4  ACTION SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data: For each type of product.
  2. For louvers specified to bear AMCA seal, include printed catalog pages showing specified models with appropriate AMCA Certified Ratings Seals.
  3. Shop Drawings: For louvers and accessories. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work. Show frame profiles and blade profiles, angles, and spacing.
  4. Show weep paths, gaskets, flashing, sealant, and other means of preventing water intrusion.
  5. Show mullion profiles and locations.
  6. Samples: For each type of metal finish required.

Retain "Delegated-Design Submittal" Paragraph below if design services have been delegated to Contractor.

  1. Delegated-Design Submittal: For louvers indicated to comply with structural performance requirements, including analysis data signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer responsible for their preparation.

1.5  INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

Reports are generally unnecessary if product data bearing AMCA Certified Ratings Seal are required.

  1. Product Test Reports: Based on evaluation of comprehensive tests performed according to AMCA500-L by a qualified testing agency or by manufacturer and witnessed by a qualified testing agency, for each type of louver and showing compliance with performance requirements specified.

Retain paragraph below if windborne-debris-impact resistance is required.

  1. Windborne-debris-impact-resistance test reports.

1.6  FIELD CONDITIONS

  1. Field Measurements: Verify actual dimensions of openings by field measurements before fabrication.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

See Editing Instruction No.1 in the Evaluations for cautions about named manufacturers and products. For an explanation of options and Contractor's product selection procedures, see Section016000 "Product Requirements."

2.1  MANUFACTURERS

  1. Source Limitations: Obtain louvers from single source from a single manufacturer where indicated to be of same type, design, or factory-applied color finish.

2.2  PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Retain "Delegated Design" Paragraph below if Contractor is required to assume responsibility for design. Most louver manufacturers do not have an engineer on staff who is legally authorized to practice in the jurisdiction where Project is located. For this reason, deleting below is advisable unless using large louvers. If specifying large or structurally complex louvers and relying on manufacturer for information about their structural performance, below can be retained and louver manufacturer or Contractor can engage a local engineer to prepare the required calculations.

  1. Delegated Design: Design louvers, including comprehensive engineering analysis by a qualified professional engineer, using structural performance requirements and design criteria indicated.
  2. Structural Performance: Louvers shall withstand the effects of gravity loads and the following loads and stresses within limits and under conditions indicated without permanent deformation of louver components, noise or metal fatigue caused by louver-blade rattle or flutter, or permanent damage to fasteners and anchors. Wind pressures shall be considered to act normal to the face of the building.

Retain one of three "Wind Loads" subparagraphs below. If retaining first, indicate pressures on appropriate elevation Drawings. Requirements in second and third are examples only. Revise to suit Project. Consult a structural engineer to quantify design loads applicable to Project. Verify compliance with codes. See Evaluations.

  1. Wind Loads: Determine loads based on pressures as indicated on Drawings.
  2. Wind Loads: Determine loads based on a uniform pressure of 20 lbf/sq. ft. (957 Pa), acting inward or outward.
  3. Wind Loads: Determine loads based on pressures indicated below:
  4. Corner Zone: Within <Insert distance> of building corners, uniform pressure of <Insert design wind pressure>, acting inward, and <Insert design wind pressure>, acting outward.
  5. Other Than Corner Zone: Uniform pressure of <Insert design wind pressure>, acting inward, and <Insert design wind pressure>, acting outward.

Retain "Windborne-Debris-Impact Resistance" Paragraph below if required by Project. The IBC defines wind-borne-debris regions. Enhanced protection applies to essential facilities. Verify requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

  1. Windborne-Debris-Impact Resistance: Louvers located within 30 feet (9.1m) of grade shall pass [basic] [enhanced]-protection, large-missile testing requirements in ASTME1996 for [Wind Zone1] [Wind Zone2] [Wind Zone3] [Wind Zone4] when tested according to ASTME1886. Test specimens shall be no smaller in width and length than louvers indicated for use on Project.

Delete "Louver Performance Ratings" Paragraph below and performance ratings in Part2 if louvers are sufficiently oversized that performance is not critical.

  1. Louver Performance Ratings: Provide louvers complying with requirements specified, as demonstrated by testing manufacturer's stock units identical to those provided, except for length and width according to AMCA500-L.

"Thermal Movements" Paragraph below may not be needed for most louvers, but should be retained if using continuous louver assemblies.

  1. Thermal Movements: Allow for thermal movements from ambient and surface temperature changes.

Differential values in "Temperature Change (Range)" Subparagraph below (for aluminum in particular) are suitable for most of the U.S.

  1. Temperature Change (Range): [120 degF (67 degC), ambient; 180 degF (100 degC), material surfaces] <Insert temperature range>.
  2. SMACNA Standard: Comply with recommendations in SMACNA's "Architectural Sheet Metal Manual" for fabrication, construction details, and installation procedures.

2.3  FIXED, EXTRUDED-ALUMINUM LOUVERS

Copy paragraphs below and re-edit for each product.

Insert drawing designation for each product required. Use these designations on Drawings to identify each product.
