LINEAR DATA PROJECT

GOAL: To learn to analyze data mathematically and to use real world data to make the analysis.

PROCEDURE: With your partner, you will first choose a topic for data collection. You must collect at least 50 pieces of data by researching/surveying/measuring/polling/etc. online sources (Be sure to site your sources) or your family, friends, etc. You will then EACH write a report which includes the following:

1. Introduction: The introduction should clearly state the independent and dependent variables. Explain why you made this choice. Be sure to state the unit(s) of measure. Finally, the introduction should state any conjecture you had at the beginning of the experiment.

2. Scatter Plot: You must create a scatter plot either on your calculator or in an excel program. The graph should be clearly titled, labeled and include your line of best fit.

3. Data Table: The data table should be included somewhere in your report.

4. Regression Equation:

Using your calculator, determine the regression equation. Include this in your report. EXPLAIN how appropriately your line of best fit represents the data.

5. Slope, etc: State the slope, x-intercept and y-intercept of your equation. EXPLAIN what each one represents based on your data.

6. Domain: Given the limitations of your data, give a reasonable domain and range.

7. Predictions: Using your regression equation, interpolate the y-value for an x that is halfway between the smallest and largest x-values. Then extrapolate a y-value for an x-value that is to the right of the largest x-value. Show all work for this process. Explain why they are or are not reasonable. (hint: www.websters.com)

8. Conclusion: Write a conclusion. Do not restate the procedure! Be sure to site any sources you may use.
