CLASS TITLE:FIRE ENGINEER

JOB SUMMARY:

Works under the supervision of the Fire Captain as a Pumper Operator and Driver of fire apparatus involving emergency response of apparatus, operation of apparatus and equipment at emergency incidents, fire station, apparatus and equipment maintenance while following standard operating policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

•Monitors radios and various telephone lines (911, fire, and emergency management); dispatches appropriate fire or forestry unit; stands by and/or contacts volunteers to respond.

•Responds to fire alarms, drives fire equipment to scene, and determines best method of extinguishing fires; participates in fire fighting activities with other fire fighters in the suppression of fires.

•Under the direction of the Captain operates pumper, assists in the laying of hose lines and directs the application of water, the raising of ladders, the ventilation of buildings, the rescue of lives and the placing of salvage covers, maintains and fills breathing air tanks

•Performs advanced first aid, search and rescue operations and lifesaving techniques for the injured or sick during fire or other emergency situations.

•Maintains and stores fire fighting equipment, apparatus and vehicles. Performs routine maintenance and/or repairs equipment, apparatus and vehicles as necessary.

•Responsible for assisting the Captain with checking off equipment on apparatus, cranking and running small engines, pumping water, and running vehicle out on highway per daily work schedule under Captain’s supervision.

•Participate in fire hydrant maintenance program.

•Cleans fire station quarters and properties. May prepare meeting room for various City and Fire department meetings.

•Attends training courses, monthly fire drills (75%), and weekly training class to equal 120 hours annually to maintain Fire Fighter Certification and CPR. Rescue Specialist Certification.

•Presents and/or demonstrates fire safety techniques in the form of a program for groups at the fire station or for civic, church, and school groups at locations within the community.

•Maintains incident and maintenance records and prepares various reports manually and by computer entry.

•Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

•Knowledge of fire fighting principles, practices and techniques.

•Knowledge of local, state and national fire codes and regulations, hazardous material regulations, underground storage tank regulations, and national standards of practice as they relate to fire department code enforcement functions, operations, and safety programs.

•Knowledge of knots used in fire fighting and rescue operations.

•Knowledge of departmental rules and regulations.

•Knowledge of geographical layout of the City and the location of streets, house numbers and fire hydrants.

•Knowledge of application of first aid and lifesaving techniques and principles.

•Skill in operation and maintenance of fire fighting apparatus and equipment.

•Skill in leading, directing and supervising individuals during emergency situations and in maintaining discipline.

•Skill in working effectively under adverse emergency conditions to include the ability to think clearly and respond quickly in high-stress situations.

•Skill in reading a topographical “topo” map.

•Ability to interpret, apply, and establish rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

•Ability to read and comprehend technical materials relating to fire suppression.

•Ability to work at dangerous heights or in other hazardous situations.

•Ability to deal courteously and diplomatically with the public.

•Ability to think clearly, speak audibly and distinctly, and take effective action in emergency situations.

•Ability to control, motivate, and train personnel to perform their duties in a safe, efficient, and purposeful manner.

•Ability to function at a high level of physical stamina for prolonged periods of time under adverse conditions.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The employee and supervisor, in consultation, develop the deadlines, projects, and work to be done. Completed work is reviewed only from an overall standpoint in terms of feasibility, compatibility with other work, or effectiveness in meeting requirements or expected results.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to protect lives and property from fire through suppression activities and public education and to provide other related service activities to the public. Effective performance results in the timely suppression of fire and minimization of accompanying losses to life and property. Errors may result in loss of life or injury, increased property damage and poor public perception of the department. The work is often complicated by the non-routine and emergency situations encountered on fire and rescue scene.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to work outdoors, climb ladders, sit in equipment, stand for long periods of time, bend, crouch, kneel, stretch, reach with hands and arms, and is regularly required to move or lift up to 50 pounds. While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, especially in hot and cold temperatures, humidity, rain, and sun. Also exposed to heat, smoke, and work in high precarious places, explosives, and moving and/or mechanical pans. The incumbent’s working conditions are typically very loud.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: Assists the Captain with management responsibilities.

MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony in any jurisdiction within seven years prior to employment.
  • 1 year of progressively responsible related experience
