Before students begin reading pages 1-3
Ask students to turn to page 14 in this Reader and predict why the dog is not happy. Write down comments made by the students. After reading pages 1-3, compare the comments with the story.
Page 1- The teacher will introduce the new sight words. The Tricky Word saw is introduced in this Reader. Saw is a Tricky Word because the students will confuse it with the word was. Show students how to use their thumbs to cover up the second syllable in the word happy. Students should be able too independently sound out the first syllable hap. When students meet new unknown sight words, they should act like they are detectives looking for word clues. The teacher should demonstrate how to use the letter sounds to “solve the mystery” of the unknown word.
For fluency practice use a tape recorder and record students reading orally. Students will then practice reading the text they recorded. After practicing, students will record the same text again. Play the before and after tapes for the students. They will enjoy hearing how much they have improved with practice.
