ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATIONS AWARDS PROGRAM

RECOGNITION: The DoD/EPA/States Region 3 Colloquium Innovation Awards Program recognizes and rewards excellence for the development, management and transferability of environmental programs/projects that increase environmental quality, enhance the mission and help make the military sustainable. Outstanding program features are accomplishments achieved above and beyond the status quo. Winners along with their agency heads will be presented the award during the opening plenary session of the Colloquium Training Event.

CATEGORIES: The award categories have been chosen to match the six breakout sessions being offered at the Colloquium Training Event and are listed below. Each breakout session of the Colloquium Training Event has been designed to present three areas of emphasis: compliance standing, training to support compliance areas of concern, and efforts beyond compliance. Each award winner will be featured as the speaker for the part of the applicable breakout session that addresses beyond compliance.

CRITERIA. The Colloquium Planning Committee with representatives from the regulatory agencies in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia along with representatives from EPA Region 3 and the military will convene to judge nominations for each subcategory. The judges will evaluate nominations based on the following criteria.

·  Creativity—Does the program/project represent a new and creative approach to problems or issues? Is it new, unique or significantly "out-of-the-box thinking"? Does it go above and beyond federal and state requirements?

·  Effectiveness—Has the program or practice been effective in achieving its goals and purposes to this point? Are there demonstrated results, results, results. (Money saved, reduction in air pollution, energy saved, pounds recycled, water saved/recycled, etc...)?

·  Transferability—Could the program or practice, aspects of it, or lessons learned be transferred to others? Were there successes in involving the base personnel, residents, and the local community as partners or in educational and community relation activities?

·  Significance—Does the program or practice address significant issues or problems either within the facility fence line or that are regional in scope? How well does the program support the military readiness/civil works mission, and how effectively were management of significant environmental aspects integrated into mission activities?

·  Standing-Are there any enforcement actions at the facility (active or pending)?
