Please read before you start :

Important Note to the Teacher

  • Please note that these activities are not meant to be a complete Learning and Evaluation Situation nor an Evaluation Situation. The first intention of these easy-to-use activities is to develop C2 and the Response Process.
  • We have provided a choice of reinvestments tasks, two short versions and one long version.
  • Please read the complete Teacher Notes and Student Booklet before starting the activities to get acquainted with the different activities. This will also allow you to add personal ideas.
  • You also have an Evaluation Booklet for C1, C2, C3.
  • Duration : about 6 periods.

Video #1 - Living Their Lives Essentially On-Line

PART A : Before starting…Activating prior knowledge

Individually, students look at the pictures (teens and computer) and make associations to fill out the word organizer. Students then share their answers in teams of two. Finally, have a whole class activity.

TEACHER TIP :
-There are many C1 opportunities throughout these activities. Make sure that students get to work with different partners.
-Tell students that they will have to hand in their Student Booklet at the end.

PART B. Before starting …Fill out a survey.

Students discuss the different questions with a partner to discover their computer profile and computer use. Explain experiment to students.

PART C. Before starting…An Experiment to try.

Students will have to commit to completely disconnecting themselves from all forms of media and to take notes on how it goes.

TEACHER TIP :
You could decide how long this experiment will last depending on how often you see your students. It can be carried out for one day, a few days or a week.

BEFORE WATCHING :

Students answers questions individually.

WHILE WATCHING :

Students individually take about five minutes to record, in a “quick write,” on their first first impressions of the video. Explain what a quick write is.

AFTER WATCHING :

Part A

Students answer questions individually.

Ask students to share their answers as a whole-class activity.

Part B

Students decide whether the statements they read are true or false.

Correct with students.

Part C

Students answer questions individually and then share their answers with a partner.

Reinvestment Task #1 – short version

Retelling the story

Students retell the video in their own words with the help of prompts. Students may use the notes and annotations from the video(while you are watching section).

Reinvestment Task #2 – long version

Interview

Students will conduct an interview. They have two choices : As a reporter, they will interview one of the teenagers from the video or interview the producer of this video.

TEACHER TIP :
Always model what students have to do by giving them a short example.

Optional Activities

1. Quiz for parents

Students interview their parents to discover what kind of cyber-guide they are.

2. An Interview with a teacher

Students interview 2 teachers to see how they use technologies in their classroom.

TEACHER TIP :
Both of these optional activities are done as homework. Make sure to discuss the results in class afterwards.
Video #2 - Private Worlds Outside Parents’ Reach

BEFORE WATCHING:

Students read different quotes by different specialist in the field and match them with the appropriate person.

Students take notes and share with their partners.

Reinvestment Task

A letter

Students will have to write a letter to one of the teens. They will have to include advice and solutions to help them. Students will have to read their two texts, take notes and use these notes to help them give advice.

TEACHER TIP :
Read the Note Taking handout at the end of the Student Booklet with students and model what they have to do with a prior text.

Final reflection questions

Students answer questions individually.

Student share the results of the disconnection experiment.

TEACHER TIP :
- Go back to the first activity they did (Activating prior knowledge) to see how their perceptions have changed by watching the videos and doing the different activities.
- Don’t forget to discuss the two Optional Activities ( Quiz for parents and Interview with a teacher)
- Ask students to hand in their Student Booklet. This will allow you to assess their notes they took and their participation throughout the activities.
