SFSP County Wide Eligibility 2018

The two primary sources of data that may be used to determine whether a site is area eligible for the Summer Food Service Program are school data and census data. The Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act allows the use of school data to establish area eligibility in the SFSP [42 U.S.C. 1781 (a) (1) (A) (i) (l)]. In order for a site to be determined area eligible, school data must indicate that the proposed meal location is located in a school attendance area where at least 50% of the children from at least one of the schools in that attendance area are eligible for free or reduced price school meals.

In a review of Kentucky schools, there are 100counties in which every attendance area in that county has at least one school that meets the necessary criteria. Taking this into consideration, any point in that county can be considered “eligible.” Sponsors who have sites in these counties do not have to list individual qualifying data for each site. Instead, sponsors are to list “CWE County Name” as the qualifying data. This replaces the need for sponsors in those counties to identify individual qualifying data for each site in the application. This is acceptable for open or closed enrolled sites sponsored by School Food Authorities, private non-profit organizations, and government organizations. This reduces the burden of the application process for sponsors and in doing so, will hopefully encourage sponsors to take on more sites. The following counties fit these criteria:
