Whatcanbefunded: Scancostswhereappropriate,stafftime,facultytime(limitedto5%oftotaleffort unless preapproved), supplies.Payment milestones will be negotiated with each award.

Projectduration:Maximumofoneyear. No-cost extensions will not be granted.

Reporting:Grant recipients must agree to the following: Monthlytelephone conferences between University of Washington and Philipsproject team members. Quarterly written reports and or discussions with program monitors. A final report. Projectupdates at UWP‐PPP Research Steering Committee meeting if invited.

UWP-PPP Priorities:Projects that are in targeted areas of interest, including, but not limited to the following: Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big Data and Clinical Informatics, see Requirements section.

Projects that are intended to generate preliminary data for NIH orequivalentfunding applicationsor other larger follow-on projects.

UW faculty working in collaboration with UW Radiology faculty

Multidisciplinary collaborations are strongly encouraged to enable the element of discovery at the intersections

Projects with the potential for translation by Philips.

Background

The University of Washington Department of Radiology in collaborationwithPhilips,isannouncingour thirdroundofPilotProjectPrograms(PPPs)structuredtoalignwithjointUW and Philipsstrategicgoals.

TheintentofthisRequestforProposalsistogenerateresearchsubmissionsthatwillbeconsideredforpilotprojectsupportundertheUW- PhilipsMasterResearchAgreement,andmanagedaspartoftheUW/PhilipsSteeringCommittee.

ThisdocumentwillprovideguidanceontheRFPprocessandrequirementswhichwillallowtheproposaltobereviewedsuccessfully.

Philips andUWhavebeenpartners inalong-standingandsuccessful collaborationunderaUW-PhilipsMasterResearchAgreementestablishedin2004.Duringthistimetherehasbeenover80activeprojectscreated,publications,IPandtechnologytransfer.Thecollaborationhasbeenwidereachingwith projectsspanningAcuteCare,ImagingDiagnostics,Intervention,HealthcareOperationsandothersacrossabroadarrayofhealthcaretechnologies.Thisstrongpartnershiphasseenthenumberofactiveprojectsintheportfoliogrowbyover450%since2007.

Award

TheUW/Philipscollaborationalreadyhasmultipleprojectssupportedbyseedfundingandresourcesharing.Thiseffortisdesignedtofurtherstimulateandfundnewresearchandexpandtheportfolio.Atotalof$200,000isavailableforseedfundingforsuccessfulproposals,whichisintendedtofund2 to 5proposals,dependingonmerit.Requestsforotherthanmonetarysupport(e.g.hardwareorsoftware)maybeconsideredaspartofthereviewprocesshoweversupportforsuchrequestswilldependuponavailability. Oneofthegoalsoftheseedfundingistosupportresearchwhichcouldleadtosuccessfulextramuralgrantapplications.AnygrantstemmingfromanapprovedprojectwillcontinueundertheMRA,orsimilartermspendingagreementfrombothpartiesasdefinedintheassociatedResearchPlan.

Anyqualifiedresearcherwithavalidappointmentattheinstitutioniseligibletosubmitaproposal.StudiesareexpectedtobeperformedusingcurrentPhilipsHealthcareproducts. AllapprovedprojectswillbesubjecttothetermsoftheexistingMasterResearchAgreement(MRA)betweenPhilipsandtheUniversityofWashington,andwillrequiredocumentationintheformofResearchPlanswithtimelines,resourcesanddeliverables. Proposalsdetailingconcretedeliverablesthatwillbelikelytoaffectthedeliveryofcareandpatientoutcomeswillbemorefavorablyreviewed.

ReviewProcess

AspartofthemasterresearchagreementbetweenPhilipsandtheUniversityofWashingtonaResearchSteeringCommittee(RSC)hasbeenestablished. Thiscommittee,comprisingrepresentativesfrombothparties,isresponsibleforreviewingproposals,selectingprojects,andmonitoringtheprogressandoutcomes.AletterofintentshouldbesubmittedfirsttotheUWSCmembersforinitialreview,andasubsetofproposalswillbesenttoPhilipsSCforfurtherevaluation.Pendingsuccessfulfirst roundreview,thefinalreviewoftheproposalswillbeconductedbyajointPhilips-UWteam. Atthisstage,ifrequired,theinvestigatormaybeaskedtoprovideadditionalinformation.
