From the Pastor’s Desk

Who are we? Who, as a church, are we? This is a good question to ask ourselves periodically, and especially as we celebrate our church anniversary this month. After 13 years, who are we as Grace Hills Baptist Church?

For me, that answer is encapsulated in our mission statement, refined as part of our church’s 10th anniversary in 2014. The mission of Grace Hills Baptist Church is to connect with God, care for one another, engage the world, and grow in Christ. These identifying characteristics are the DNA of Grace Hills, and we are reminded of them through our worship banners each Sunday morning. Drawn from the Great Commandment (Matt. 22:37-40) and the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20) of Jesus, they are the markers for who we are and what we do.

So how have we been doing at living up to who we are? This summer, we’ve attended to each of these key areas. We’ve gathered for worship and connected with God in new and relaxed ways on Sunday mornings. We’ve cared for one another through time spent together outside the walls of the church and walking with one another through difficult seasons of life. We’ve engaged the world through participating in Impact Virginia and sports camp, as well as by collecting needed materials for Standing Rock. And we’ve grown in Christ at every level, through Vacation Bible School, youth Sunday night Bible study, and Adult Bible School. This summer has been a summer to live out our mission as Grace Hills Baptist Church. What will the fall bring? I can’t wait to find out!

Music Notes for August

My last daylily bloom dropped to the ground Monday. Every year when that happens, I feel like summer is coming to an end. We have had a great summer so far--with Vacation Bible School, adult Bible study, and worship focusing on the stories of our faith. Just recemtly underway was the week of Impact Virginia and sports camp. August will bring Youth Sunday, recognition of our church anniversary, and great music. Summer celebrations have just begun!

The handbells are preparing to visit Bedford Baptist Church and ring ( with their ringers) for a hymn sing on July 30. We will dash out of worship on that morning to get to Bedford by 1 p.m. and fellowship with them. We will ring the music from that event on August 27 at Grace Hills in morning worship.

On Sunday, August 13 (church anniversary), Tracy Johnson will be our guest soloist in worship. The ensemble will travel to Henry and Jayne's church, Goshen Baptist (Buckingham) on August 7 to sing for them as they celebrate revival. Susie Thomas will be playing for those services all week, and you are so invited to join the fellowship of that church in revival. I believe that worship will begin at 7:00 each evening. If that is not correct, I will get back to you.

Anthems in August will include "Every Road", "People Need the Lord", and "Farther Along". Bells will play "How Great Thou Art" and "I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light". Get into Sunday worship, whether you walk into a church while on vacation or here at home at Grace Hills.

The Appomattox Baptist Association WMU is publishing a cookbook with the proceeds going to fund our three scholarships. There are 700 recipes included, many from Grace Hills' cooks. We need an estimated number of who is interested in purchasing before we order the cookbooks. If you are interested in ordering a cookbook, please sign up on one of the sheets in the church vestibule, fellowship hall, or Sunday School classes by August 13. The cost will probably be $20.00. They will be in our hands by October 1 so they will be great Christmas gifts. Thanks so much for supporting these scholarships and purchasing the cookbooks!!
