15 vehicles fitted with Allison Transmission collect MSW and clean streets of Boadilla del Monte

MADRID – Urbaser, a leading company in the waste collection sector, boasts leading-edge facilities and a modern fleet in Boadilla del Monte (Madrid). All vehicles in the fleet of over 3,500 kg (3.44 tons) are fitted with Allison Transmission automatic gearboxes to improve the efficiency and productivity of the service.

The waste collection and street cleaning services of the town of Boadilla del Monte in Madrid has improved significantly since Urbaser secured the 10-year contract for the management of these services in 2012. Apart froman attractive financial tender, which results in significant annual cost savings for the municipality, Urbasar also provided a whole range of resources, including new, more efficient vehicles and the newBoadilla del Monte Centre for Street Cleaning and Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Collection Machinery, inaugurated last November.

This new centre, located in the Prado del Espino Business Park, is a state-of-the-art facility and a model of sustainable architecture, thanks to a HVAC system based on geothermal energy, a lighting system featuring LED technology and efficient water consumption. The three-storey building features a workshop, changing rooms and offices. The facility also boasts an underground parking lot for 30 service vehicles, a ground-level parking lot for trucks and a high-tech natural gas filling station.

In 2013, the company renewed part of the existing fleet, bringing it into line with this modern infrastructure. A total of 30 new light and heavy vehicles were acquired, bringing the total number of vehicles in the fleet to 40. The 15 vehicles weighing over 3,500 Kg(3.44 tons)are fitted with Allison 2000 and 3000 Series transmission, which has significantly added to the quality of the service. This service is now more efficient in terms of operating costs, fuel savings, maintenance costs and downtime, and the working conditions for drivers have also improved. Moreover, some of these vehicles are powered by natural gas rather than diesel, making them more silent, cleaner and less contaminating.

The vehicles fitted with Allison operating in Boadilla are: 1 street washer, 1 multi-service vehicle, with crane and snow plough, 1 side-loading waste container cleaning truck, 4 three-axle split body rear loaders, 1 two-axle one-piece body rear loader, 3 side-loaders, 1 three-axle multi-service vehicle, 1 hook lift truck with mounted crane, and 2 street sweepers..

Urbaser serves a population of around 50,000 in Boadilla del Monte, collecting 18,000 tonnes of organic waste per annum, 1,100 tonnesof packaging waste and 2,900 tonnes of bulky waste. The street sweepers cover around 60 km (37 miles approx.) per day in two shifts and the municipal solid waste (MSW) collection trucks do around 50-55 km (31- 34 miles approx.)per day.

According to Eduardo Núñez, Municipal Services Delegate at Urbaser for Western Madrid, “the difference between manual and semi-automatic transmissions and Allison automatic transmissions is very significant in terms of cost-effectiveness and productivity. In the specific case of a refuse collection truck, the time saved on the route results in the collection of around 30% more containers”.

Mr Nuñez points out that “the improvement is also considerable in terms of reliability. Downtime for corrective maintenance is prevented, as is time spent waiting for delivery of spare parts, giving rise to potential annual net savings of almost 100 man-hours per truck”.

With respect to the influence of Allison gearboxes on the driving of the different vehicles used by the cleaning and MSW collection service, Nuñez says: “the advantages of Allison transmissions are particularly obvious in the case of garbage trucks, which operate with continuous stops and starts, but these gearboxes are also highly recommendable for street washers and multi-service vehicles. Although the latter vehicles operate with fewer stops and starts, efficient provision of the service requires prolonged close attention on the part of drivers. Allison transmissions enable operators to concentrate more and better on the job in hand, resulting in higher qualitywork”.

José Ignacio Feliú Álvarez, Head of Services at Urbaser in Boadilla, feels that the main benefit of Allison automatic transmissions is that “above all, gear shiftsare very quick and responsive, engine rpm does not drop and the truck does not lose power during shifts. Automatic transmission makes the engine quick and efficient and this is extremely beneficial in day-to-day operations”.

“The drivers are happy, driving is more comfortable, there are fewer breakdowns and maintenance is cheaper and easier. The gearboxes do not give problems and are very reliable”, he adds.

With respect to natural gas powered vehicles, Feliú Álvarezpoints out that “natural gas affords savings of between 15% and 20 % compared to diesel. It is a clean fuel and easy to handle in terms of refuelling and, of course, it is more eco-friendly in that it significantly reduces CO2emissions”.
