Dear Parent or Guardian:

Griffith High School will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on February 14, 2018. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. It is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessment because it provides a common measure of student achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation's Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.

Your child might take the NAEP pilot assessment, which will be administered on laptops provided by NAEP. The assessment asks student questions base on their knowledge on mathematics, reading, and science. Each student will be assigned one subject at random. A survey questionnaire will also be given to the student to complete. The questionnaires provide valuable information about participating students’ educational experiences.

In 2015, Indiana had a 99% student participation rate in 4th and 8th grade. In addition, Indiana students have shown significant gains in mathematics and reading since 2011. Below are examples of the media headlines about Indiana results:

  • “Indiana’s fourth-grade 2015 NAEP mathematics was the fourth highest score in the nation.”
  • “Indiana had the seventh highest score increase, compared to all other states, in the 8th grade NEAP reading assessment from 2011 to 2015.”

We would like to thank these seniors and their peers, for their efforts and time as they have clearly led the way in previous NAEP administrations. Donating their time and effort for this assessment will leave a valuable footprint for Indiana education policy makers. Students may skip any question or survey question they wish. More information is available at under the section “What Questions Does NAEP Ask?” The assessment takes about 120 minutes for most students. The results are completely confidential (in accordance with the Confidential Information Protection provisions of Title V, Subtitle A, Public Law 107-347). If you do not want your child to participate, please notify me in writing by December 1, 2017.

We appreciate your time in andlook forward your child joining the other students at our school in order to demonstrate academic achievement as measured by the NAEP assessment.

Sincerely,

Brian Orkis
