Oct 7, 2015NAME:______
SECTION A. Briefly define the following, noting that just “translating” abbreviations is only half the job! (2 pts @):
1.Green Book
2.STA
3.Microsatellites
4.Illumina
5.Quantitative trait
6.PCR
7.Hansen
8.PTA
9.PPD
10.Allele
SECTION B. Here’s the essay stuff. Answer these questions on the lined paper provided. Try to write neatly enough so that a blind, old man can read it. Thanks. Questions 1, 2 and 3 are 5 pts @, while 4 and 5 are 10 pts @.
1.Describe the components of a vacuum milking system.
2.So… let’s say aliens come down and grab you and are going to spirit you away to Alpha-5, but tell you that you can leave one important message for the Earth to remember you by. Two catches: it has to be focused on a single concept about dairy cattle genetics (Hey… they are aliens, so we can expect them to be a little weird) and it must be brief (even at warp speed, Alpha-5 is a long ride so no dilly-dallying). Let’s hear your one sentence memorial which encapsulates your take on the most important aspect of dairy genetics along with a brief justification (two or three sentences) explaining why.
3.Explain the milk ejection reflex.
4.Briefly describe three events that contributed to the establishment and/or growth of the US dairy industry, including
when the event occurred (within five years).
5.Explain the dairy product classification system (Class I, II, etc.), describing products in each class and how prices are derived for each class.
SECTION C. Indicate whether heritability of each of the following traits is high (>40%), moderate (20-40%) or low (<20%). Use “H” for high, “M” for moderate and “L” for low. (2 pt @)
TraitHeritability
1.Milk Yield______
2.Breeding Problems______
3.Fat %______
4.Udder Depth______
5.Milk Fever______
SECTION D. Work out these two problems on lined paper provided. Feel free to write on this sheet, but note that none of that will receive credit. You must do it on the lined paper to receive credit. You will receive partial credit as long as I can figure out what you’re doing even if you do not arrive at the appropriate answer.
1.Calculate two indexes, one with a 1:1:1 emphasis for milk, protein and type and the other with a 3:2:1 emphasis, for these bulls given the following information. Which bull would produce superior daughters, on the average, under each of the two emphasis scenarios? (15 pts)
Bull PTAM PTAP PTAT
A1900801.5
B1500852.5
C1400803.0
Mean1500751.5
SD 200 50.5
2.Calculate the inbreeding coefficient (FX) for individual X in the following diagram. Remember to use the table headings as a guide. You will receive partial credit for any portion of the calculations that I can make sense of even if you don't get the answer entirely correct. Use lined paper just to keep things as neat as possible. Would the resulting offspring X have an inbreeding coefficient that is less than the rule-of-thumb? Explain. (20 pts)
