5 year Service Award / Ian Nicholson presented an award to Angela CratesNational Regatta Programme / Andrew Sevens had prepared a discussion Document to be presented to the meeting.
Focus of the document was the on water programme. Around which other activities need to fit.
A key concern of the meeting was not enough down time programmed. A problem with this is the need to work around weather. But the meeting felt that a half day at some point was important.
This did not have to be the whole Regatta at once.
The programme currently allows for Seamanship occupying one day. Perhaps it could be spread giving some down time for an age group.
To be considered:
We need to get a minimum of 3 days sailing to get a meaningful result.
Most of the Auckland and local Scouts will have been to Kelly Tarlton’s.
Some contingents may be planning a few days after the Regatta to cover off other activities.
We will need flexibility to move all activities.
Other on site activities will be necessary.
National Regatta Sailing Slots / Possibility of 4 or 5 slots in a day. Need to cover for largeish numbers of attendees.
Core to making this work will be the need for 2 safety/race crews as the day will be very long, with racing starting 0900 and finishing 1830 to 1930.
On top of that is prep time getting boats ready and the course set. Plus the reverse at the end of the day.
National Regatta Crewing Options / 3 Options discussed
1. Attendees can sail both classes
2. Attendees can sail only one class
3. Team concept
Option one will give 4 races per class (Cutter and Sunburst). So some will sail only 4 races over the minimum 3 days while some will sail 8. Some budding Sunburst sailors will miss out.
Option 2 and option 3 give 6 races for everyone.
Because there are attendees who will want to sail both classes the Team concept gives that option. Juniors as an example, a team of 7 who can swap between cutter and sunburst each day. This should give those who want to sail Sunbursts an opportunity.
Because it gives the most sailing and the most flexibility the meeting opted for the team concept.
Boat Show = 15-16-17-18 May. / Fiona Ryder from Youthtown attended. She is responsible for the “Interactive Zone” aimed at youth attendees at the show.
She is looking for help to run the activities as has happened at past shows.
Core times are 1000 to 1800 each day except fridsy which is a late night and so needs support through to 2100.
Because it is a bit intense hour long sessions are best. They would like people there for 4 hours working 1 hour on and 1 off.
They need 8 to 10 adults per hour.
Plus venturers and senior scouts.
Junior scouts will not be running the events but may take part.
There will be 3 or 4 sites, with 3 or 4 adults per site.
2 Venturers per adult.
There will be a Scout stand for Groups to use.
And there will be the Cardboard Boatbuilding competition.
New Kayak Rules and Kayak Leader Certificate / Warren introduced the new concepts.
A pamphlet was handed round to introduce the Water Rules and the Kayak Leader Certificate.
It all engendered some discussion. Core issue is that we have sections that are not being safe on the water.
The certificate applies to all leaders, even those who already have charge certificates.
We need instructors to run courses.
Course has been developed for other users as well as Scouts by Kayak experts. Course will be about half a day including practical.
Given Venturer canoes are no longer available, what should we buy / Warren has negotiated a very good price with Q-Kayaks, an NZ manufacturer. This will be circulated.
Meeting was addressed by Ron Bird / Discussed recent Tall Ships event
Also reminded us of the differences in maritime by-laws, for instance on the Waikato PFDs are required at all times.
New Cutters. / The meeting resolved (moved Chris Patterson, Seconded Blair Stanley) to apply for funding with ASB Trust towards the purchase of 12 new cutters.
Participating Groups are committed to finding their share of the cost, expected to be $5000.
Gaining a Charge Certificate / A one sheet describing the steps was circulated for consideration and feed back
Meeting closed at 2200
