Launch of new weight management programme in Stevenage to be delivered by Hertfordshire’s Public Health Service

Re: Hertfordshire’s new Specialist Weight Management Service

Referrals are now being taken for patients to receive behavioural support to lose weight, with up to one year of evidence-based intensive support provided by Hertfordshire’s Health Improvement Service (a part of Public Health)at no cost to the individual or the NHS.

  1. Referral criteria: - patients must:
  • Be registered with a GP in Stevenage
  • Be over 18 years
  • Have a BMI of 30+
  • Not be pregnant
  • Have attended Slimming World© or Weight Watchers© in last 12 months OR had an NHS Health Check with a QRisk2 score of 10 or more*
  1. What can patients expect?
  • A trained weight management specialist who will understand and support the individual to make gradual changes to their lifestyle
  • A phone call from Hertfordshire Health Improvement Service within 48 hours of referral
  • To make a commitment to attend the whole programme
  • No special requirements other than to follow the principles of a healthy balanced diet
  • 9 x 1-2-1 sessions over 12 weeks
  • 4 xfurther sessions over the following 9 months
  • No fees or charges
  • An appointment within 2-4 weeks (daytime and evening appointments are available)

Hertfordshire’s Health Improvement Service is a team of professionals trained to support individuals in making important changes to their lifestyle to improve health and wellbeing. They work with individuals to help them identify and plan sustainable changes which are focused on the client’s own motivation and goals.

This specialist weight management programme has a strong evidence base for long-term success using an intervention called Counterweight.© Counterweight©has been evaluated for over 15 years, with at least 30% of participants achieving a minimum of 5% weight loss and keeping it off.

The intervention consists of a toolkit of resources; topics such as goal setting, managing difficult times, meal planning, getting more active, alcohol, food labelling, eating behaviours, maintaining change and preventing relapse are covered.

*The QRisk2 score is set at 10% risk of a CVD event in the next 10 years. This reflects NICE guidance for consideration of statins.
