TEE = total energy expenditure; REE = resting energy expenditure; PAEE = physical activity energy expenditure; PAL = physical activity level.
1Formulas used in calculating TEE and REE
Calculated TEE for men (kcal/d) = 864 – [9.72 X age(yr)] + PA X [14.2 X weight(kg) + 503 X height(m)], where PA is the physical activity coefficient is assumed to be low-active, as follows.
Sedentary: PA = 1.00 if PAL is estimated to be 1.0<1.4
Low-active: PA = 1.12 if PAL is estimated to be 1.4<1.6
Active: PA = 1.27 if PAL is estimated to be 1.6<1.9
Very active: PA = 1.54 if PAL is estimated to be 1.9<2.5
Calculated TEE for women (kcal/d) = 387 – [7.31 X age(yr)] + PA X [10.9 X weight (kg) + 660.7 X height(m)], where PA is the physical activity coefficient is assumed to be low-active, as follows.
Sedentary: PA = 1.00 if PAL is estimated to be 1.0<1.4
Low-active: PA = 1.14 if PAL is estimated to be 1.4<1.6
Active: PA = 1.27 if PAL is estimated to be 1.6<1.9
Very active: PA = 1.45 if PAL is estimated to be 1.9<2.5
Calculated Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) was estimated from equations in the literature (34):
Calculated REE for men (kcal/d) = 9.99 X weight (kg) + 6.25 X height (cm) – 4.92 X age (yr) +5
Calculated REE for women (kcal/d) = 9.99 X weight(kg) + 6.25 X height(cm) – 4.92X age(yr) -161
PAL (Physical Activity Level) = TEE/REE
PAEE (Physical Activity Exercise Expenditure = (kcal/d) = 0.9*TEE – REE
