Collective Action Amongst Pashtun Communities

Are You Pashtun and Living in Melbourne? If You Are, You Might Be Interested in Participating in a Research Project Conducted by Dr Aneela Babar (Endeavour Research Fellow at the Monash Asia Institute). Dr Babar Will Be Here Till July 2007 Undertaking a Study On Developing New Knowledge and More Complex Representations of Muslim and Pashtun Communities and Their Social Relations in Australia and Beyond. The Project Will Give Specific Attention to Their Experiences in Australia in Relation to Ethnicity and Gender. By Participating in This Study You Will Help to Create a Better Understanding of the Community. Further Details About the Project Will Be Available On the Mai Website Soon. Item 12. Indonesian Studies Postgraduate Workshop, Anu

The Australian National University Hosts Postgraduate Students Conducting Research On Many Aspects of Indonesia in Varied Disciplines, Including Economics, Political Science, Linguistics, Literary Studies, Anthropology and History. The College of Asia and the Pacific Is Organising a Workshop to Bring Together This Diverse Body of Students for the First Time.

All Postgraduate and Honours Students at Anu Who Are Conducting Research On Indonesia Are Encouraged to Attend. This Is a Unique Opportunity to Share Your Research in a Supportive Environment, to Learn About Research On Indonesia Being Conducted by Other Students, and to Meet and Network with Students with Similar Interests From Across the Campus and Further Afield.

The Focus of This Two Day Event Will Be Presentations by Students. You Are Invited to Submit a 200 Word Abstract Outlining a Presentation. The Paper Can Take the Form of a General Outline of Your Thesis, a Thesis Chapter, Conference Paper or Draft Article. The Emphasis Is On Work-in-Progress Rather Than Polished and Final Pieces of Work. Each Presentation Will Be 30 Minutes, Followed by 30 Minutes for Questions, Answers and Discussion.

Students Who Do Not Wish to Present a Paper Are Also Encouraged to Attend. Staff Members Who Are Indonesia Specialists Will Also Be in Attendance, and There Will Be Presentations by Staff Members On the Shape of the Indonesian Studies Field.

Free Lunch Will Be Provided On Both Days. There Will Be a Dinner/Social Function for All Participants On the Evening of Thursday 19 April.

A More Detailed Program Will Be Distributed Closer to the Date.

Students From Universities Other Than Anu Are Welcome and Encouraged to Attend; Unfortunately Funding Support Will Not Be Available.

Caroline Fry Is a Paintings Conservator at the Centre for the Conservation of Material Culture. In 2004 Caroline Was Awarded the Asialink Residency at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Hanoi. While There She Conserved an Iconic Vietnamese Painting ëEm Thuyí Painted by the Artist Tran Van Can in 1943. At the End of the Residency Caroline Was Awarded a Medal by the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture and Information for Her ëContribution Towards the Preservation of Vietnamese Artí. Caroline Will Discuss the Conservation of This Painting.

'Australian Made ñ a Multicultural Reader' Attempts to Reach Out to Scholars with Updated Information and Current Debates On Writers As Representatives of Their Particular Communities, and Fresh Critical Perspectives On the Writers Belonging to Various Hyphenated Identities in Australia and Their Multicultural Texts.

Contributions Are Invited On Multicultural (Australian) Authors. The Articles (3500-5000 Words) Can Deal with a Particular Text or Texts of an Author, Theme or Any Aspect That Reflects the Theme ëAustralian Madeí. The Articles Can Be Interdisciplinary in Nature Addressing These Themes but Keeping in Mind That It Is a Literary Anthology. Item 18. Winter Workshop: Writing Self/Representing Other: Migration, Mobility and Travel

The Centre for Asia Pacific Social Transformation Studies (Capstrans), with the Support of the Asia-Pacific Futures Research Network (Apfrn), Is Calling for Applications From Phd Students and Early Career Researchers at Australian Universities to Participate in the Third Capstrans Winter Workshop for Doctoral Students and Early Career Researchers. This Year the Theme of the Workshop Is Writing Self/Representing Other: Migration, Mobility and Travel.

The Aim of the Workshop Is:

ï to Explore Recent Work Which Critically Engages with the Question of Writing/Representing the Subjects of Research;

ï to Assist Doctoral Students and Early-Career Researchers to Enhance Their Academic Knowledge and Expertise in Relation to Research Methodologies; And

ï to Provide Opportunities for Targeted Reading and Writing Exercises That Allow Participants to Explore Different Writing Techniques.

This 3 Day Workshop Will Be Convened by Capstrans Director, Associate Professor Lenore Lyons. The Workshop Will Provide an Opportunity to Explore the Methodologies, Approaches, and Negotiations Which Underpin Research Relationships, Dialogues and Exchanges in the ëFieldí. By Focusing Specifically On Research Which Explores Migration and Other Forms of Mobility, We Seek to Critically Engage with the Issue of Power in Research Relationships Which Are Characterised by a Diversity of Subject Positions (Marked by Class, Gender, Ethnicity, and Sexuality) As Well As Temporal and Spatial Shifts (for Both Researcher and Researched).

Item 19. Summer Course at the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies

The University of Tasmania Buddhist Studies in India Exchange Program Will Again Be Running a Summer School Unit to Be Held in India From 28 December 2007 to 31 January 2008. The Exchange Program Involves Students in an Intensive, Month-Long Study Program Conducted by Staff From the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies at Sarnath Just Outside Varanasi. University of Tasmania Staff Travel with the Group and Supervise the Overall Program. The Costs of Travel, Insurance, Accommodation and Meals, As Well As Visits to Important Historic and Cultural Sites, Are Included in the Overall Cost of the Program (Up to $4,000), Although Applicants Should Note That the Unit Also Incurs a Hecs Charge. The Minimum Requirement for Admission Into the Program Is Completion of First-Year Studies at Any Australian University.
