First Grade Syllabus

2016-2017

Dear Parents,

Welcome to First Grade Back-to-School Night. We are delighted that your child is in our classroom. This year your child will explore the world of learning and develop many new skills. The following is a brief summary of the curriculum we will be covering this year.

Religion

Textbook: We Believe- William H. Sadlier

Children will be learning about Jesus, the Holy Family, the Gospel, and the church. They will be singing and sharing, as well as praying daily. These activities will help the children connect their experiences with the Gospel which lays the foundation for faith development.

Language Arts

Reading Textbook: Adventures of the Superkids- Rowland Reading Foundation

English Textbook: Voyages in English- Loyal Press

The children will be involved in an integrated program of listening, speaking, reading, and writing which is strongly based in phonics. Rich and interesting stories, as well as Spelling and English will be covered in Reading. Phonological awareness and linguistics will be strongly encouraged. Students will also fine tune their manuscript in handwriting. Reading logs requiring the students to read 10 minutes every night will be sent home weekly. If your child reads 10 minutes every night by the end of the year your child will have read over 2,000 minutes of free reading.

Math

Textbook: My Math- McGraw Hill

Here, a hands-on approach that provides enrichment, as well as remedial lessons will provide an understanding of basic math concepts of addition, subtraction, ordinal numbers, place value, time and money. Please spend at least ten minutes every night memorizing basic addition and subtraction facts.

Science/Social Studies

Science Textbook: Science- McGraw Hill

Social Studies Textbook: School and Family- Houghton Mifflin

In Science, the children will be exploring and discovering components of life, earth, and physical science. In Social Studies, the children will learn how to be a good citizen. In both subject areas, projects will be assigned to do at home. Please do these assignments with your child and not for your child. Also, be advised that late projects will result in a lower grade.

Fine Arts

Mr. Gonzalez will teach music to our class for forty-five minutes once a week in the music room. The children will learn songs and music appreciation. Mr. Martin will be in our classroom for forty-five minutes once a week to teach art. The children will perform hands-on projects to gain a greater sense of art appreciation.

Spanish

Student will have Spanish for forty-five minutes once a week in the classroom. They will have a blast learning and exploring a new language.

Physical Education

The children will attend Physical Education class, with Coach Justin, once a week. The principles taught in Physical Education will be integrated into the classroom to promote good sportsmanship, sharing, and caring.

Homework

Homework is primarily used as communication to you as to what objectives we will be learning that week; it serves as a reinforcement to class work. It is not graded, but it is passed out and collected daily. Failure to turn in homework will lower your child’s work habits grade.
