Complete Science in Action Leonardo da Vinci and Science in Action Nanotechnology in your student workbook.

Levers

Observe the many household machines on the trolley. Select three, one to demonstrate each of the types of lever. For each machine you are to draw a labelled diagram (label effort, load, and any other important features) and write a short explanation of the simple machine. Then complete the Lever Experiment in your booklet.

Inclined Planes (Wedges)

Complete the experiment – Turn of the Screw in your booklet and then build a model using a hidden inclined plane (screw), using Lego Technics. For your model you are to draw a labelled diagram (label effort, load, and any other important features) and write a short explanation of the simple machine.

Wheels (Axles, Pulleys & Gears)

Complete Experiments Investigating Pulleys and Gearing Up in your booklet and then build the following models using Lego Technics I. For your models you are to draw a labelled diagram (label effort, load, and any other important features) and write a short explanation of the simple machine.

Challenge

When you have completed the tasks above you may attempt one or more of the challenges listed below, using Lego Technics:

·  4WD Vehicle – capable of crossing one metre of tan bark.

·  Formula One Car – travel 5 metres in less than 10 seconds.

·  Winch – to pick up a 1 kg weight and lift it 1 metre.

·  Helicopter – it has to “fly” – we’ll define flight in class

·  Robot – (Card 20)

You may work in pairs or threes – no larger groups!!!
