Engineering Manager

Based in South Wales, Crossflow Energy has delivered a ground breaking new wind turbine. Founded in 2007 the company has completed extensive research and development which has delivered the design for a robust product. Advanced CFD modelling using Swansea University’s world-renowned CFD expertise has been validated by the performance of our large-scale model at Port Talbot, and in a series of wind tunnel tests of scale models at world renowned MIRA testing facility.

The first large-scale Crossflow Turbine has been operating at Port Talbot Steelworks since 2016. This innovative turbine is low-noise and offers low cost transportation, installation and operations due to it simple, robust design. The company is on track to install its first pre-production prototype at the Port Talbot site. Results from this demonstration will support our development of a fleet of Crossflow Turbines. Scaled from 10 to 50kW, these will be uniquely positioned to supply electricity and mechanical power; opening up a range of new market opportunities for small-scale wind in remote and heavy industrial locations.

Crossflow is looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to join our team. Reporting directly to the Director of Engineering, this position requires strong technical leadership skills, project management, quality management, and process management skills.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Personally mentor and direct project management of large scale wind turbine prototype project and set up project management system and organization in close alignment with guidelines and systems provided by the company.
  • Responsible to oversee all aspects of design, engineering and project execution and implementation of the project including systems design, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, vendor and subcontractor contract negotiations and budget supervision, and supplier and resource selection.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with engineers and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate resources within team to execute project plans, and delegate tasks as required.
  • Minimize company exposure and risk on projects; perform risk analysis and management of design and engineering and project construction and installation.
  • Work with General Manager to provide HR and management for staff, including interviewing and hiring new employees, completing performance reviews, setting goals, dealing with disciplinary issues, and determining workload assignments and schedules.
  • Develop and give technical presentations to potential project investors, company management and collaborative partners.
  • Additional responsibilities include development and maintenance of engineering standards and procedures, quality assurance and quality control on all project work, ensuring compliance with company policies and procedures, and other responsibilities as assigned.

Essential Competencies/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Engineering degree or equivalent in Civil, Mechanical or other engineering field
  • Extensive project management and hands-on engineering design and project implementation experience.
  • Experience designing and building large rotating machinery systems.
  • Experience estimating construction costs, project scheduling and coordination.
  • Experience managing project costs, schedules and financials.
  • Experience managing a team of minimum of 4-7 engineers.
  • Must be proactive, strategic thinker with strong interpersonal skills, possess a willingness to succeed, be able to embrace new challenges and adapt to change quickly.
  • Must be decisive and willing to be accountable for those project decisions as well as supportive of other groups within the company not under responsibility.
  • Must have the ability to maximize efficiency through teamwork and innovation.
  • Fully computer literate with Microsoft Office, Project Planning and CAD (Solidworks desirable).

Desirable

  • Knowledge of safety standards such as CDM regulations 2015
  • An interest and experience with renewable energy systems
  • Chartered Engineer

As this is a full time position, only candidates willing to move locally to the area would be considered suitable. A full driving license and willing to travel is essential for this role.
