General Syllabus

I.  BASIC COURSE INFORMATION:

A. Course Description: IMED 2411, portfolio development. Four hours credit. Emphasis is on preparation and enhancement of portfolio to meet professional standards and study of professional organization, presentation skills and job seeking techniques. Two lecture and four lab hours each week. This course should be taken durig the final semester prior to graduation. Lab fee.

B. Intended Audience: Students having successfully passed all course prerequisites and pursuing an associate degree in Design and Applied Arts/Graphic Arts.

II. INTENDED STUDENT OUTCOMES:

A. Core Objectives Required for this Course

1. Critical Thinking: to include creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information

2. Communication: to include effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral and visual communication

3. Teamwork: to include the ability to consider different points of view and to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal

B. Course Learning Outcomes for all Sections

Build a portfolio that presents a full measure of the skill level attained in digital design that displays a working knowledge of the principles and elements of design.

III. ASSESSMENT MEASURES

A. Assessments for the Core Objectives:

1. Critical Thinking: students will be required to develop innovation through inquiry. Specific assignments, graded by rubric, will provide a platform from which critical thought will emerge.

2. Communication: continuous story-boarding and thematic presentations during critiques builds a greater understanding of the dynamics of the student’s work. This may be assessed by rubric.

3. Teamwork: Assignments target specific services or products by which student groups/teams develop design solutions for the client. Working together, communicating and developing innovative approaches to design problems assessed using a rubric.

B. Assessments for Course Learning Outcomes uses a rubric

1. Critical Thinking: assessed through effective use of Internet research

2. Communication: assessed through effective display of interpersonal skill in both critique and production setting

3. Teamwork: assessed through effective problem solving skills in a group setting

IV.  INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:

Software demonstrations, field trips, location shooting, practical seminars and mentoring, guest speakers, lectures and regular hands-on assignments

V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND POLICIES:

Students are assigned articles from the Internet and hard copy trade journals. Portable flash memory devices are required.

Course Policies – This course conforms to the policies of Angelina College as stated in the Angelina College Handbook.

2.  Attendance – Attendance is required as per Angelina College Policy and will be recorded every day. Any student with three (3) consecutive absences of four (4) cumulative absences may be dropped from the class. Records will be turned in to the academic dean at the end of the semester. Do not assume that non-attendance in class will always result in an instructor drop. You must officially drop a class or risk receiving an F. This is official Angelina College Policy.

All classes begin at assigned times. It is suggested that each student act with professional bearing. Preproduction and workflow methods are critical in developing industry ready graduates and a rigorous approach to understanding the technology and the aesthetics of design is expected.

Expanded product shot with full text and images for two-page spread. Critique: 17 january.

2. Expanded fashion shot with full text and images for two-page spread. Critique: 1 feb

3. Thirty second commercial with music bed and special fx. May 3

4. Expanded food styling shot with full text and images for two-page spread. Critique: 22.march.

5. Portfolio with production stills of project work and finished design solutions. Critique: 12 april

VII. EVALUATION AND GRADING using a rubric

The instructor may modify the provisions of the syllabus to meet individual class needs by informing the class in advance as to the changes being made.
