Up From the Ashes: Alex Greenbottem

No one in Alex Greenbottem’s family ever expected much from him. Left at a bowling alley at the age of two, Alex’s early life was rife with one setback after another (“Greenbottem”Wikipedia). Although he was near number one in his class at Roughneck High School in Flattersville, Maine, he had to drop out due to “contagious narcolepsy” which was “affecting the well being and sleep habits of his fellow Roughneckians” (Massey 69).

After earning his graduate equivalency diploma, Greenbottem found himself working as a Foley editor for Judd Apatow projects. It was there that he realized his love for the poetry of sound (“Greenbottem” Biography). Greenbottem completely revolutionized the poetry movement in the 1990’s when he began “incorporating natural sound with the poetry of language” in his groundbreaking first book The Sound is More than Silence (“Greenbottem” Wikipedia).

The influences of Greenbottem stretch far beyond simply those of the literary mind. Composers such as John Williams have incorporated Greenbottem’s sound poetry into musical scores for major motion pictures. Hip Hop artists like Drake and Li’l Wayne have used Greenbottem’s poetic lines extensively in their own new albums as well (Massey 73).
