Sixth Grade reading program

HOWL (Heim's Original Wolf Literature)

Each grade level at Heim participates in a different reading program. The sixth grade program is HOWL. Each year a different list of titles are selected by the librarian for HOWL. Of the selected titles, sixth graders will be expected to read anythree of them but are encouraged to read more (or all) of the selected titles. Students reading thethree required or more will receive prizes.

Sixth grade language arts teachers generally require their students to read eight books during the course of the year as a part of their language arts grade. At least three of these six must be HOWL books.

How to get credit for reading the HOWL books

After reading any of the HOWL titles 6th grade students will come to the library todiscuss on the book with Mrs. Ashby. These discussions will simply be a chance to talk about things the student liked or didn't like about the book. The discussions are not a test filled with small facts about the book, just a chat. Students who are especially worried about "passing" the chat are welcome to bring notes about the book along with them to help remember important facts in the book.

Prizes and incentives

Reading the threerequired books will be part of the English grade throughout the year but in addition, 6th graders will earn the following prizes for participating in HOWL:
After reading and reporting onthree books - a free paperback book
After reading and reporting onsix books - another free book and candy or another prize
After reading and reporting on ten books - another free book, candy and a pizza party!

As an incentive for getting their work done quickly, students who have read and reported on their three HOWL books before December 7 will be invited to a donut party.
All students who read at leastthree books will be invited to a voting party during the school day inApril with snacks and awards.
