Delayed discharge of elective hip and knee arthroplasty patients (2011-12).

National Average: 6.6 days;Our average: 6.0 days.

Recommendation: Start physiotherapy with 12 hours and pain control with Gabapentin.

Re-audit planned for June 2013 after start of ERP (enhanced recovery programme).

Recommendation: Better control of post-op nausea and vomiting and provision of home physiotherapy.

Use of tranexamic acid to decrease blood loss during total hip and knee arthroplasty. 2011

Recommendation: All patients having primary hip and knee replacement to have I.V. or local tranexamic acid during surgery.

Displaced distal radius fractures managed in Accidents & Emergency (2009-2010)

Recommendation: Manipulations must be supervised by an A& E consultant or an orthopaedic registrar and more training of junior doctors in evaluating post reduction radiographs of wrist.

Audit of patients admitted for prosthetic total hip dislocation (2008-2009)

Recommendation: First prosthetic dislocation must be reduced in Operating theatre and not in A&E to assess the stability of the hip joint.

Awareness among health care professionals of Canadian cervical spine rule (2005-2006)

Recommendation: A&E doctors should use the Canadian cervical spine rules to minimise radiation exposure without jeopardizing patient care.
