Oregon Coast Jazz Party Celebrates 10 Years

The Oregon Coast Jazz Party celebrates ten years of jazz this year! Set for Oct. 4-6, this event brings world-class jazz to the central Oregon coast in the “jazz party” format, which means that visiting musicians will appear in different combinations at different times, known as "sets," over the course of the jazz party. Performances are held at the Newport Performing Arts Center and the Shilo Inn Suites Hotel, both in Newport, Oregon.

Oregon Coast Council for the Arts (OCCA) is the organizational sponsor of the international event, and partners with local businesses and more than 60 volunteers in the production of the jazz party.

“This year I have combined familiar favorites and new faces, artists you know and love, and those who are making their Oregon Coast Jazz Party debut,” noted returning Music Director Holly Hofmann. “I’ve scheduled opportunities for you to hear our featured musicians in many different settings – solo, duo, trio, quartet, nightclub – as well as in exciting large group jam sessions.”

Hofmann's 2013 lineup includes some of the hottest names in jazz as well as long-time Newport favorites. One of the hottest jazz trios in the world is new at this year's party: the NYC-based Bill Charlap Trio – composed of pianist Bill Charlap, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Kenny Washington. The renowned vocalist Jackie Ryan and legendary tenor sax-man Rickey Woodard join the party from the LA area, while drummer Sylvia Cuenca, bassist Essiet Okon Essiet, and returning drummer extraordinaire Lewis Nash hail from New York City.

Longtime Newport favorites Houston Person (tenor sax), Terell Stafford (trumpet), Bruce Forman (guitar), Mike Wofford (piano), and Northwest veteran drummer Gary Hobbs return this year, while some regional jazz lights round out the roster: pianist Randy Porter, as well as his Randy Porter Trio players, bassist John Wiitala and drummer Jason Palmer.

A fiery Afro-Cuban ensemble called Picante makes its Oregon Coast Jazz Party debut this year: led by trumpeter Bryant Allard, the group features bassist Al Criado, percussionists Reinhardt Melz and Al Martin, pianist Devin Sanders and tenor sax-player and vocalist Catarina New. Attendees can enjoy these artists and many more in seven sets during the weekend.
