Irish Hospice Foundation’s Open Access Policy

The Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF) is committed to the support and development of research in end-of-life care and bereavement. IHF encourages the open dissemination of research and knowledge in end-of-life care and bereavement. As such we support Open Access as defined by the National Open Access Policy statement [i]in respect of our publications and publications by recipients of funding through our grants and scholarships.Our Open Access policy[ii]mandates that authors publishing on projects, developments or research funded in whole or in part by IHF make their work available in an Open Access repository.

What is Open Access (OA?)

Open access is the process through which peer reviewed scholarly research and literature (journal articles, book chapters and reports) is made available online free of copyright restriction.

Routes to Open Access

Before Publication – Authors should

  • Be familiar with IHF Open Access policy
  • Be aware of the self-archiving policy of the publication(s) they are submitting to. Detailed information on journal self-archiving policies are available on the SHERPA Romeo site [iii]
  • Be aware IHF does not provide additional funding to meet ‘Gold’ open access article processing fees

After /at Publication – Authors should

  • Ensure publisher approved copy of publication is deposited into the Lenus repository or the institutional repository of their institution/ organisation
  • Advise Irish Hospice Foundation on publication and provide DOI link to article full text if loaded to their institutional/organisational repository
  • Where no access to an institutional/organisational repository is available, forward the publisher approved full text article to IHF for addition to the Lenus repository
