NAPPIES - A PARENTS GUIDE

Introduction

Knowsley is committed to improving its recycling performance and to raising awareness of successful waste minimisation schemes. We also care about our environment and know that our Knowsley families are also looking for more environmentally friendly options when purchasing products. This has led to a number of parents choosing or enquiring about real nappies for their babies.

Today, we have lots of choice when it comes to deciding on which nappy to choose for our baby. For example did you know that you can purchase nappies that you can wash and reuse again and again and again…..? These nappies can also be reused for second or third children and the estimated savings for using home laundered real nappies is approximately £500.

Today’s reusable nappies come in a wide range of stylish, modern, well-fitted washable fabrics that are easy to use and can be washed simply on their own or with the rest of the family washing.

Alternatively, a nappy laundry service will deliver a supply of clean, fresh cotton nappies and collect and take away the dirty ones. For prices, please contact the Laundry Service Providers

So, if you wish to find out more about alternatives to disposable nappies, please read on.

Why should I use real nappies?

Best for Baby.

The nappies are 100% cotton, chemical free, soft and kind next to babies skin. Cotton nappies can also help babies with skin conditions such as eczema and also help prevent other sensitive skin conditions.

Best for the Environment

Re-useable nappies produce no waste to send to landfill. Therefore no chemicals /gasses are being released into the atmosphere.

Dirty disposable nappies buried in landfill sites can take up to 500 years to decompose giving off methane gas as they do so. This gas contributes to Climate Change.

It is estimated that in Knowsley we dispose of a staggering 844 tonnes of nappies every year. This costs your local council £65,815 every year to collect and dispose of these nappies.

This cost will continue to rise each year as our landfill sites become increasingly full. This will also impact on Knowsley’s Global Footprint.

Best for your Budget

Having a baby can make monthly bank statements a regular ordeal. Prams, nappies, wipes and clothes; the list goes on and on. It often seems as if the smallest member of the family has the greatest need!
The demands of your new baby don’t always need to come at a pinch to your finances. Real nappies not only win hands down in the baby style stakes but also come up trumps in the personal finance department too.
By the time your baby is potty trained he or she could have had as many as 4000 nappy changes, or more! So whilst all parents will have become a dab hand at swift nappy changing, parents who choose disposables end up throwing away their hard earned cash along with the dirty nappy.
You can kit your baby out with all the nappies they need from the high street for under £80 (the cheapest real nappy option), add £1 per week to wash them and you’ll still save £500 compared to the market leading disposable nappy.

Different types of reusable nappy

Terry Nappies – these are the traditional cotton nappies. They are the cheapest of the usable nappy options. Terries can be folded and held in place with pins or ‘nippas’. This type of nappy needs to be worn with a waterproof outer layer. Bio-degradable liners are also recommended with this type of nappy.

Pre-Folded – these nappies are basic cotton non-terry nappies that are folded and held in place by waterproof wraps. Bio-degradable nappies are also recommended with this type of nappy. They are usually purchased in packs from birth to potty and can be expensive initially. However, once bought, no further purchases are necessary.

Shaped Nappies – This type of nappy is already shaped to fit your baby. Velcro or popper fasteners are used to keep the nappy in place. These are the most expensive of all the nappy ranges but can be bought over time, as baby grows. They are very easy to use.
