Unit 1: Add and Subtract Integers and Rational Numbers

Students will understand that:

·  There is a difference between ‘plus’ and ‘minus’ (the operation signs) and ‘positive’ and negative’ signs, even though they are both written as + and -. And, every addition or subtraction integer sentence must have an operation sign.

·  Since addition and subtraction are inverse operations, we can rewrite subtraction problems as addition problems.

·  If a math sentence is written to represent a word problem/real world situation, the math sentence must be accurate (correct operation signs AND correct integer signs)
