Increasing through put rates of black accounting students (INTRABAS)

Introduction

The short supply of skilled staff is a serious obstacle to the competitiveness of industry in South Africa. The Government of South Africa implemented the levy grant scheme which aims to expand the knowledge and competencies of the labour force resulting in improvements in employability and productivity. The levy grant scheme funds 25 setas established in March 2000 in terms of the Skills Development Act, to cover all sectors in South Africa, including government

Fasset is the Finance and Accounting Services Sector Education and Training Authority.The Fasset Seta set strategic targets in line with national policies and priorities to assure quality education and training via an Education and Training Quality Assurance bodies to facilitate the achievement of world-class finance and accountancy skills in South Africa

This is achieved through new approaches to planning for training, learning programmes, incentives and an improved employment service. The.Fasset sector has entered into partnership with the University of the Free State to provide opportunities for new entrants and potential entrants into the sector labour market and enhance access to opportunities

The INTRABAS Project

The University of the Free State in support of Fasset created the INTRABAS project to enhance the throughput rates of black accounting students in the accountancy programmes of the School for Accounting, Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of the Free State. The project addresses at least four of the national scarce skills specifically; external Auditor, Accountant (general), Accountant in practice and Finance manager.

The INTRABAS project will specifically focus on the scares skills through 4 programmes. The project will be run in two streams with two programmes in each stream. One stream is directed to general accountancy (GA) that is in harmony with the outcomes of SAIPA and the other stream is directed towards chartered accountancy (CA), which is in harmony with the outcomes of SAICA.

General Accountancy Stream:

  • INTRABAS (B Com Acc) - 3 years, NQF level 7
  • INTRABAS (B Com Hon Acc) – 1 year, NQF level 8

Chartered Accountancy Stream:

  • INTRABAS (B Acc) - 3 years, NQF level 7
  • INTRABAS (B Acc Hon) – 1 year, NQF level 8

The Intrabas project provides bursaries for students enrolled in the above programmes. The bursary provides tuition fees and book fees. Interested candidates are invited to apply for the bursary by filling the online form found online at . t
