ROCK D’FORT WORKSHOP SYNOPSES

SESSION 1 – POWERHOUSE KEYBOARDS

16 June 2006, Friday, 5pm - 7pm

Many people are often confused with the following keyboard related terms such as Music Workstation, Synthesizer, Organ, Piano, as either all the same or do not know what some of them actually are. We are here to clear the air and elaborate on the musical expressive capabilities and sonic possibilities of Music Workstation keyboards.

The way music is made has been changed forever with the introduction of technology. MIDI instruments are now the tools of artists from an enormous range of styles and traditions. The quality and perhaps even the quantity of music have grown as a result of the MIDI phenomenon.

The “sixties’ and ‘seventies’ were an explosive time for the creation of new musical instruments. In addition to the blossoming use of electric guitars and new keyboards such as electric organs and pianos, a whole new breed of musical instrument was beginning to appear on albums and in concerts—the electronic synthesizer, or also known as the Music Workstation as of today.

Audience would get an insight about the music production flexibility of Music Workstation employed in most genres of music from classical, pop, rock, dance, hip hop, R&B…the list goes on. At the same time, they would learn more about such gears and equipment used by top producers, musicians and bands such as Beyonce Knowles, Jordan Rudess (Dream Theatre), Natalie Cole, Moby, Paul Oakenfold, System Of A Down, Linkin Part etc.

SESSION 2 – THE ONLINE GUITARISTS!

17 June 2006, Saturday, 5pm – 7pm

Our second installment of workshops is targeted at guitarists. Beginning in the middle part of the twentieth century, electric guitar began its explosive influence on music. Today, in most popular styles of music, the electric guitar is a dominant instrument, powering the sound of countless compositions, musical groups, artists, and recordings. The guitar amplifier’s role in the tonal evolution was equally significant. In amplified music and in the styles that evolved with and because of amplification, the guitar is almost synonymous with the music itself.

Designs of different brands became known for their musical genre leanings, with Fender more often used for blues and country, and Marshall stacks becoming the mainstay of heavy metal and rock. With the guitar sounds of the Beatles that were so different from Jimi Hendrix or Pink Floyd, these cherished tonal signatures were sought after for the particular sonic mood that they might inspire. A successful guitarist typically ends up owning multiple guitars and amplifiers in order to compose and record with different guitar tones.

Today’s guitarists are undergoing a phase which keyboardists went through the past 20 years whereby their gears are getting more powerful. With the aid of technology, guitar freaks can now own a massive collection of guitar tones made popular by legends in the music industry or even create their own signature tones without burning a big hole in their pocket. “I can play and sound exactly like my favorite guitarists now!!!”

This session addresses issues faced by guitarists, history of guitar amplification, industry development over the past few decades and the current trends. Explore background information on legendary guitarists and insights into the gears they use, and also the tone settings of these famous sounds used in their recordings.

SESSION 3 – THE RECORDINGS STUDIO HOME MADE

18 June 2006, Sunday, 5pm – 7pm

Our last session would address most musicians from vocalists, guitarists, bassists and keyboardists on a macro level.

Ever hear your favorite song on radio and wished you could produce your own demo CDs of professional quality like what the pros do in their recording studio? And we mean really doing it yourself and also in the comfort of your own home!

DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) are the key to the answer. Digital recording equipment of today is packed full of innovative features and at smaller price tags as compared to its more expensive predecessors i.e. analog tape recorder which offered poor sound quality and limited features. Formerly sneered at by those with more macho studios, it’s hard to ignore the fact that you can now produce truly pro-level recordings with a compact, budget-friendly box.

Everybody’s talking about home studios and we are beginning to see a tremendous growth in the number of amateurs, hobbyists, students and home users producing records in the comfort of their own home. Aspiring musicians and music enthusiasts who dream of being music arranger, composer, sound engineer and producer can do so now with the aid of modern technology.

We’ll explore with the audience the possibilities and ease of producing high quality audio recording with such portable hard-disk recording systems.

Note: All performance and workshop details are subject to change.
