Miss Costigan’s Tidbits
October Newsletter
Thank you for your support!
I am excited to announce that our class had the highest number of PTA parents in the grade level J What a great way to start the year! Additionally, thanks to Mrs. Andrews (Hannah’s mother) and Mrs. Sherwood (Aaron’s mother) for volunteering to be our room parents for the year. Classroom volunteer information for parties, etc. is coming home in Friday folder.
Principal Award Winner…
And the winner is Joey Smith! Congratulations to Joey for his hard work, participation in class, and wonderful classroom manners.
Interims
Interims are now available to review on Infinite Campus. If you are in need of an Infinite Campus online account, please contact the main office. As a class, we are off to a strong start!
Book Orders:
Book orders will be due November 5th. Parents are also able to order online at www.scholastic.com. There is no due date for online ordering. The classroom code that needs to be entered in on the website is H7KKP. Additionally, any purchase made helps build our classroom library J
Language Arts News:
We just finished Regarding the Fountain. The students did a great job with it, especially with inferencing and predicting. If your child enjoyed this book, there is a sequel (possibly a good holiday or birthday gift). It is titled Regarding the Sink by Kate Klise.
We will soon be starting one of our major writing projects. It will be a research report on a water animal. Students will bring an information sheet home next week. We will spend a solid month on this research report, much of what will be done at school. However, students may and should type their final report at home.
In English, we have been working with subjects, predicates, and action/ being/ helping verbs. We also just wrote ‘Creative Creatures’ stories focusing on descriptive details. They are displayed in the hallway if you would like to check them out. We have some great imaginations in Room 27!
Math News:
In math, we recently concluded our addition, subtraction, and multiplication unit. How open these students were to learning new tricks to add, subtract, and multiply! Maybe even you learned a thing or two from them! I would like to stress the importance of studying multiplication facts EVERY night. These MUST be memorized in order for your student to excel both this year and in middle school. The goal is 32 problems in one minute. About ½ of the students have reached this. Keep up the good work!
We began Chapter 3 in math last week. It revolves around geometry. Students will learn how to use a protractor, polygon properties, tessellations, and triangle types.
Missing Work Reports:
Please expect to see a missing work report come home about every 2 -3 weeks. This requires a signature along with the work being turned in within a week. Your child should be getting another missing work report by Tuesday, October 12th if s/he is missing anything. Also, Infinite Campus always lists missing work along with current grades.
Friday Folders:
Just a friendly reminder to check, sign, and empty your child’s Friday Folder each Friday. Usually I wait to hand out the most important papers until Friday when it is able to be placed into the folder.
Math Club:
For those of you who signed up, Math Club’s first meeting is Wednesday, October 27 after school until 3:15. I am looking forward to seeing some familiar faces!
Stamps
I am hoping that by now all parents/ guardians who requested math answer keys in the mail have received them. You should have up to chapter 6. If you are a parent who would like an Everyday Math answer key, please send in 3 stamps for the remainder of the school year in an envelope with your child’s name marked on it! You will receive the answer key in the mail. Thanks again for your help.
Conferences:
Conferences will be held Thursday, November 4th and Tuesday, November 9th. I will send out reminders about conferences within the next few weeks, including your scheduled time. Many of you already signed up during Open Houses, so thank you. Those who have not signed up and would like to, or anyone who may need to change their time, please fill out the attached sheet and have your child return it to me.
Pledge Leaders:
Our class had the privilege of being the first group to do morning announcements along with the Pledge on the PA system. They have been doing a fantastic job! We are now around the middle of the alphabet with last names.
Red Bird Walk-A-Thon
As many of you may already know, RBE is holding its second walk-a-thon in order to raise money for Smart Boards and other sorts of technology. Each student has a goal of $20. Our walkathon will take place on Thursday, October 21st . The rain date is scheduled for the next day. We are so very thankful for all of last year’s donations, because as a result, and as you may have heard, our classroom now has a SmartBoard!! We really appreciate the generous contributions made to support the students of Madison.
Student Council Representatives:
Room 27’s representatives are as follows-
Nick Amos
Morgan Breedlove
They have been diligently working away and doing a very nice job representing our class J
Box Tops/ Sunny D Labels
We are still collecting box tops and Sunny D labels should you have any laying around the house. Once we collect 20 Sunny D labels, we will receive 20 free books!
First Grade Buddies Activity
Last Monday, we met with our first grade buddies for the first time and made pumpkin glyphs. You should be very proud of what great role models your children have been for the RBE first graders.
At the end of the month, in honor of Thanksgiving, Mrs. Robinson’s class along with ours, will be creating a joint cookbook of all of our favorite Thanksgiving recipes. Therefore, students will be asked to bring in a typed recipe of their favorite Thanksgiving/ holiday meal. It is not due yet, but something to keep in mind. Also, Mrs. Robinson and I are trying to gather up 3-4 parents who would be willing to laminate, make copies, and bind cookbooks either during or after school. If you are interested, please let me know! As much or as little help would be greatly appreciated.
Class Website
I am excited to announce that the class website is up and running. It is a work in progress but something that I hope to spend more time on in the near future. If there are any suggestions for it, I would love to hear them. You can access it by doing the following:
1. www.madisonschools.net
2. click on “Red Bird” on left
3. click on “staff websites” on left
4. click on Miss Costigan
Online Achievement Test Practice
I just received access to an awesome website that I thought I would share with parents who might like additional OAT prep for their child/ children. The limited time, free practice can be found at www.linkstolearning.com. Once there, the User Name is oh6903 and the password is preview. Once on the website, you will click on Ohio, then quizzes, then Ohio Achievement Test. I was really excited to see that once a subject and quiz are chosen, the website automatically sends you the answer key and score when an email address is entered in. It is a great resource and will expire on November 8th so taking advantage of it now would be most beneficial.
