Murder in a Mathematics Mafia Meeting
Setting
The four leaders of the Mathematics Mafia, named Quarter Pie; Three Quarter Pie; Five Quarter Pie; and Seven Quarter Pie, representing the four quadrants of the U.S. held a meeting on Saturday (5/1/10). According to our now deceased informant, the meeting’s purpose was to discuss a promotion of the Algebra I smuggler (our undercover agent) to Algebra II smuggler. We now know that the meeting was held to murder our math mole.

The leaders sat along the long side of a table facing the mole. They sat in order of increasing quadrants from left to right. The mole sat at the midpoint of the table on the opposite side. At about halfway through the meeting, the lights went out and there was a single gunshot. When the lights came back on the mole was dead.

All three security guards heard one gunshot and ran toward it. All leaders ran out of the room toward the exit but were confronted by three security guards. In the gunfight that ensued, each leader eventually ran out of ammunition and surrendered. Quarter Pie, Three Quarter Pie, and Five Quarter Pie had 9 mm handguns while Seven Quarter Pie had a Desert Eagle .50 caliber weapon.
