Purpose of Job
Growing and maintaining networks, developing new business opportunities, leading bids and closing sales resulting in commercial contracts for PBS Innovation and Applied Research Services, in line with the University’s Research and Innovation Strategy.
Providing management and leadership of the Business Services and Research Office.
Co-ordinating, and encouraging involvement of, subject groups and individual colleagues to engage with Innovation and Applied Research Activities.
Key Responsibilities
Business Development and Engagement
To ensure that the BSRO continues to, and achieves, the KPis and strategic objectives relevant to its activity.
To work with, and fully support the AD(E&I) and AD(R).
Contribute to the development and regular review of the Faculty Strategy for Innovation and Applied Research, to provide a clear focus for business development and sales activity.
Conduct focused networking with key businesses and business organisations regionally and nationally, establishing relationships with key business leaders. Co-ordinating and undertaking visits to external organisations to maintain and develop business opportunities. Lead and develop other PBS colleagues in this role.
Negotiating sales and other business opportunities, closing the deal, ensuring completion of all necessary processes and handing over to the Business Engagement Officer for on-going account management.
Identify and understand the innovation and applied research competencies and strengths within PBS, the wider University and external partners, in order to select appropriate bidding/project opportunities in a competitive environment.
Diagnose customer needs and lead the preparation of proposals and bids for innovation and applied research. Monitor and report these activities to the Faculty Research and Innovation Committee and other forums as necessary.
Analyse and report on a regular basis to R and I committee and Faculty Executive upon bidding outcomes – developing a targeted approach to the bidding process which seeks to maximise success/income.
Directing, and maintaining excellent customer relationship management.
Work with colleagues to develop and enhance the Business School’s reputation in the business community and in particular the marketing and promotion of innovation and applied research capabilities to business. Promoting in-company CPD.
Provide feedback to Subject Groups and Course Leaders on insights and learning opportunities from the experience of services to business, and the likely future needs of employers, which may improve student employability.
Support, encourage and develop colleagues engaged in innovation and applied research in the faculty, planning and recruiting new staff to meet project needs.
To support the work of the Enterprise Development Manager with regard to the Small Business Charter and the faculty bid for Gold Award status.
To work with the Faculty Accreditation Manager in the measurement and monitoring of business and community impact data to support the achievement of accreditation.
Leadership and Management
To organise and lead the Business Services and Research Office – providing inspiration and direction in line with the University/Faculty Strategic Plan and the needs of lead academics.
To ensure that staff have the requisite skills, training and motivation.
To ensure that the staff respond positively and flexibly to operational demands.
Setting standards of performance, measuring achievements and taking any corrective action as required to ensure that key performance indicators are met.
To ensure that staff are kept informed, by lead academics, on a regular basis as to developing workloads and priorities.
To maintain an equitable distribution of work and ensure appropriate cover for all business critical activities.
Undertaking staff supervision and PDR’s including production of a development plan for the unit. Ensuring all staff have appropriate levels of customer care training.
Setting and Meeting Objectives
Developing an annual activity/resources plan which aligns to the relevant strategic plans and indicates progress towards the achievement of key performance indicators. Reporting to senior management as appropriate.
Setting team and personal objectives under the PDR process.
General
Participation in relevant management activities and processes, including faculty committees and operational meetings.
To undertake any work relevant to the grade as required by the AD(E&I) the Faculty Manager.
