Instructions for completing graph:

M&M lab

1.  Open up the program Microsoft excel

2.  Excel uses “cells” for data entry, you can then ask the program to create a graph using the information you have entered! J That said; enter the following information in the following cells…

3.  Highlight the information in cells A3- G4

4.  Locate the graph symbol from the menu (looks like a bar graph)

5.  Click on column graph and choose the first option, then enter next

6.  Check to see that your graph looks accurate then enter next again

7.  Enter the following information for your graph:

Chart title = M&M Colony

Value (Y) axis = enter “number of M&M’s”

Then hit enter

8.  Check to make sure that “as object in” is clicked then hit enter

9.  To change the colors of your graph so that they match the color of the M&M’s they refer to…

a.  double click on the actual graph

b.  without losing the graph, use a single click to pick the piece of pie you would like to change

c.  once you have the correct piece of pie chosen, double click inside to be allowed to choose your color

d.  continue until all of your colors match the color of M&M they represent

10.  Now, please go back and add your name to the graph…

A.  Click on any random EMPTY cell from page one

B.  Locate “Header and Footer” under the view category

C.  Select custom footer

D.  Enter the following information: Your name

Title of assignment

Today’s Date Biology 1

11.  CONGRATULATIONS - your 1st Graph is now complete – please save your graph in your student file, then print your “sheet” to turn in with your project! *** You must click on a random cell- NOT THE GRAPH ITSELF-for all of your data and the graph to print!!! (do not leave information highlighted)

Following a similar course of action, complete a graph for information from the entire class.

1.  Enter the following information into the appropriate cells:

Give your graph a title (this time be sure to state that it is for the entire classes’ information), list the colors of M&M’s – this time, put in information from each GROUP, AND ENTER YOUR DATA…

2.  Save your information in your student file – do not close it down

3.  Insert a new row 4

4.  In cell A4, type “Total MM’s”

5.  In cell B4 enter in the following information: =sum(

*once that has been entered, click on cell B5 WITHOUT un-clicking, drag your mouse down to cell B10. This will add up all of the group’s numbers for you and give you the total number of mm’s for any given color.

***repeat this process for each of the colors of mm’s

6.  Repeat steps 3 – 9 from above, however – this time click on pie graph and choose the first option, then enter next

For the Chart title = M&M Colony (class)

7.  Now, right click on the pie itself – choose format data series to change the data labels used in the graph

8.  Now, please go back and add your name to the graph…

B.  Click on a random blank cell from page 1

C.  Locate “Header and Footer” under the view category

D.  Select custom footer

E.  Enter the following information: Your name

Title of assignment

Today’s Date Biology 1

9.  CONGRATULATIONS - your 2nd Graph is now complete – please save your graph in your student file and print your “sheet” to turn in with your project! *** You must click on a random cell for all of your data and the graph to print!!! (do not leave information highlighted)
