Ankeny High School Physical Education
MISSION STATEMENT
The Ankeny Health and Physical Education Program will empower each student to make informed decisions to lead active, healthy, and productive lifestyles.
PHILOSOPHY
Recognizing that each student is unique, the AHS Physical Education Program provides for the varying needs of students through a student-centered curriculum that provides a variety of choices of physical activities. The variety of choices creates opportunities for exposure to various lifetime activities and sports. Each student will have the opportunity to experience personal accomplishments, enhance their self-image, and develop desirable social skills and practices that lead to the growth and development of good citizens. The curriculum is designed to promote the development of physical and mental health in addition to providing students with the knowledge and skills that lead to personal wellness. AHS Physical Education emphasizes the importance of establishing and maintaining personal fitness levels, improving interpersonal skills, and encouraging the practice of physical activity for life.

SCHEDULE AND ATTENDANCE
Students will have Physical Education class every other day with the exception of Early Bird PE and Advanced Strength & Conditioning. Grades 10-12 are combined for classes. Students have 3 minutes after the bell to get dressed and be where they need to be for roll call. Students will have 5-6 minutes to dress at the end of class. Students need to wait in the PE area or cafeteria until the bell rings.
DAILY ROUTINE
A consistent format of stretching, cardiovascular exercise, and skills or game activity will establish a pattern for students’ expectations for class. Most units include lead-up skills as well as participation in activity. Students need to demonstrate the standards and skills required for each activity.
UNIFORMS
· All students must wear an Ankeny physical education shirt and shorts (can be purchased any time during the school year from Walgreens or Strawberry Patch), SOCKS, and tennis shoes.
· Shoelaces must be tied in a safe, appropriate manner (laced tightly with bows on top).
· First and last name only, on uniform.
· Students will be required to wear a borrowed uniform until another uniform can be purchased if they do not have their own uniform, or if their instructor deems the student's uniform inappropriate (holes, tears, graffiti, drawings or anything other than first & last name).
· Uniforms should be laundered frequently!
· If you forget your uniform, you are required to borrow a uniform from an instructor. See a locker room teacher as soon as you get into the locker room and leave collateral with that teacher. If a teacher is not in the locker room go find one right away. Do NOT report to class not dressed out and in need of a uniform when class is starting. Students need to return borrowed items as soon as possible after activity. Do not wait until the bell rings.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should a student wear someone else’s uniform. DETENTION will be assigned to students wearing someone else's uniform and the student will be given a TARDY when the teacher has to delay class to escort the student away from class to borrow a PE uniform.
Students may borrow a uniform or part of a uniform twice per semester without penalty. For each borrow after 2 times, students will serve a 20 minute detention with their teacher and parents will be notified.
SHOWERS are optional. Students who choose to shower need to bring their own towel.
JEWELRY Wearing jewelry during class is not recommended because of the risk of it getting broken, lost, or causing injury. Bring a container for your jewelry and lock it in your locker.
LOCKER ROOM EXPECTATIONS
· It is each student’s responsibility to read the PE whiteboard inside the PE locker room for possible instructions for class. If there isn’t anything on the board, dress out and report to wherever you reported to the last time you had class. Always assume you are dressing out for activity!
· Do not bring glass into the locker room.
· PERSONAL BELONGINGS SHOULD ALWAYS BE LOCKED UP. All students are issued a padlock and a locker. USE YOUR LOCK!!! If you misplace your lock, check with a locker room teacher to see if it is in the lock lost and found. You should ALWAYS double check to make sure all possessions are in your locker and the padlock is locked.
· Students must use a school-issued lock only and must use the locker that is issued to them, not one of the big lockers. Students may use a big locker near their issued locker only during their PE class.
CELL PHONES
It is against Iowa Law (H.F. 561) to use or possess cell phones in bathrooms or locker rooms. Use or possession of a cell phone in those locations could result in criminal charges under this law. DO NOT BRING YOUR CELL PHONE TO CLASS!
DOCTOR'S NOTE, NURSE’S NOTE, or a NOTE FROM HOME
· All doctor, school nurse notes, and notes from home are considered absences from participation in class.
· A doctor’s note that says a student needs to refrain from participation for two weeks or longer is considered a chronic illness or injury, which is an exemption. An exemption means those students will not lose points for being absent from participation in physical education.
· All doctor’s notes should be given to the school nurse prior to attending class. The nurse will document the exemption and notify the PE teacher of the length of the absence. Please ask doctors to include what you CAN do. Adaptive activities will be provided for students with minor injuries or illnesses.
ABSENCES AND OPTION TO MAKE-UP CLASS
With the exception of school-related absences, students absent from class for appointments or illness have the option to make-up class. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange make-up time with their instructor. Students can participate with another teacher's PE class to earn points if your PE teacher is not teaching at the time you can make-up. To earn full points the make-up class should match the unit/activity the student missed in order to demonstrate the skills and standards for that activity.
PROCESS FOR MAKING UP CLASS
· Get a make-up slip from YOUR PE teacher, fill it out. If you are in a study hall or the learning center, that teacher needs to sign the bottom of the slip to dismiss you to come to PE. If you have open campus, you still need to have a make-up slip to enable your teacher to keep track of make-ups.
· Make-up classes are ONLY during early bird and normal school hours, including Seminar.
· Make-up with your teacher and as soon as possible so that you can demonstrate the skills learned during the unit of activity that you missed.
· Always check in with the instructing teacher when you make-up class & give them your make-up slip. You return the slip to your PE instructor.
SKIPPING CLASS
Not knowing if it is an A-day or B-day is not an excuse. This information is on the main office window and on Infinite Campus. STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO MAKE-UP CLASSES THEY CHOOSE TO SKIP because of space, safety, and liability.
EVERYDAY EXPECTATIONS
