TEACHER-NATURALIST INTERN
The Stony Brook - Millstone Watershed Association is seekingenthusiastic, creative and motivated candidates to fill twoPAID positions as Teacher-Naturalist Interns in the Education Department. Located in Hopewell Township, NJ, the internship provides training and experience in a wide array of environmental education activities. The Education Interns work in the new LEED-Platinum certified Watershed Centerwith its exhibit halls,classrooms and laboratory. Additionally, we utilize the surrounding 930-acre Watershed Reservewith its fields and forests, pond and streams as an outdoor classroom. The internship includes on-site housing on the Nature Reserve. Compensation: $13,000 salary plus housing
Start Date: March 8, 2016End Date: December 10, 2016
Tuesday through Saturday, 9 AM-5 PM, some occasional Mondays and evenings
Monday through Friday, 8 AM-5:30PM, plus occasional overnights (June 20-August 19, summer camp season)
Job Responsibilities:
- Assist Education Team in planning and implementation of an array of hands-on, outdoor environmental education programs including
- Public programs - weekly preschool and afterschool classes, weekend programs for families and adults,
- Inquiry-based school programs and field trips, addressing the Next Generation Science Standards
- scout badge workshops and birthday parties
- Work at Watershed Nature Camp 2016 as Group Leader or Camp Counselor
- Create ecology/environmental displays, web material, and/or teaching tools
- Assist with animal care for small collection in the Watershed Center
- Maintain a naturalist journal
- Create a final intern project
- Create a personal environmental education portfolio documenting internship
- Perform other duties as requested to maintain departmental and organizational continuity
Qualifications:
- Academic background (college course work and/or degree preferable) in ecology, education, environmental studies, or related field
- Previous experience working with children, preferably in an outdoor setting
- Strong interest and enthusiasm for the outdoors and sharing nature and the environment with others
- Good communication skills with children and adults
- Willingness to learn and participate in various aspects of departmental work
- Ability to work/teach outdoors in all weather conditions
- Current certification in Standard First Aid/CPR required
- Minimum age of 21
- Valid driver’s license highly desirable
